I am going to cut the bolt handle on a 96 Swedish Mauser and re-weld it to clear a scope , but I don't know what the bolt handle material is. Does anyone know what these are made from so I can use the right filler material.
I could go with 309, but I would rather know for sure and have a better idea about pre heat and filler materials to use.

if your careful you can use a tig welder and not need any filler material

True , but I would prefer to grind in a small bevel and add some filler for a much stronger weld than just fusing the surface & adding some filler also lets me blend/polish the weld area to make it invisible.

weld all 4 sides , even if you only get 1/8 of a inch penetration , your good .

your not welding 3/4" plate .

this isn't structural welding .

the steel used on these rifles is "Swedish steel " . at one time it was a very closely guarded secret of what was alloyed .

I don't believe there is a filler material out there that would match after it is polished .

something to think about , Remington only silver solders its bolt handles to the bolt ..... it isn't a highly stressed part , unless your beating the action open with a 2x4

Sorry I don't know what to use for filler rod.I'm sure someone will know but...
I've done several ... just cut them off and fit the bolt handle and silver soldered .used brownells heat stop paste (or what ever its called now).. the solder did an amazing job and have never had one fail.I've actually been able to put the bolt in a vice and adjust the handle with a hammer when cold without any issue. But when I did the last one i borrowed a forging block and forged the handle down and it turned out very well. The complete weld/solder on handles also do a very nice job and the last one I got from brownells for about $ 20.00 . So if you can't find a filler material there are other methods that work well and won't destroy the bank..
