Had a guy drop off a model 99 at my partner's house yesterday for us to give him a quote on refinishing it...
I've never seen a rifle in such bad shape. Someone had painted the receiver and bolt with flat black paint..then scraped it off with what looks like a screw driver. The stock is cracked in 2 places.
The breech is all chewed up. It appears a round or brass got stuck in the chamber and they dug it out with a chain saw! :(
Sad that someone would treat a fine old rifle like that...

Post it in the exchange section and say that it was used by a special Canadian Militia unit that pursued tree poachers all over the north west....

just kidding, good luck with the old girl.

Thanks Darryl. It's going to take lots of 600 grit, crocus cloth and elbow grease to smooth out the scratches on the receiver, bolt and breech.
We aren't going to do the stock. Going to stay away from that part of refinishing for now.
It will be a great "before & after" candidate for pics though.

Forget about the 600 grit and crocus cloth...... start out with 220 or 240 wet/dry paper... it will take a long time to remove scratches with that. It would take forever with 600 grit. Finish up with 400 grit and if you are crazy go on with the 600 grit..... however 400 grit is a better finish for blueing.

I was going to use 600 so I wouldn't create more work for me. If he gets us to refinish it..I'll take some pics of it.
I suppose we could knock the deep scratches down with 220..cause we will be blasting it with 120 grit aluminum oxide after.
