I've got a 6.5x55 Mauser barrel mounted on an old Spanish receiver that was once a 7x57 Mauser.

These guns aren't supposed to be loaded with hot reloads.

I was wondering if you can recommend a good, accurate, deadly on deer pet load for the 6.5x55 that won't compromise my action.

7x57 Mauser was rated at 51,000 psi, while the 6.5x55 is rated at 55,000 psi. Not much difference. Just stay short of max loads in a reloading manual.

Dont have any slow pet loads but if you load to factory specs than you wont have any issues. I believe that's a 140 grain bullets moving about 2500-2550 fps.

PS the old Spanish Mauser's arent' that bad its just mostly the fact they handle gas quite poorly. Bad news if you have a case failure.

Modern loading is usually tested with M-96's unless specified

If you are to load in low density (less than 87-90% ocf case capacity), try to stay away of very slow burning powders (4831 and slower) to avoid any SEE phenomenom especially if the barrel have a long throat.

The Federal 6.5x55 I bought this year specified a 140gr. @ 2600fps and that should not get you in any trouble with an M96 or similar action.

After much searching and reading on this forum, RL-22 is THE powder to use with 140gr. bullets in the Swede. The 4831's both work well, too, but RL-22 is the first choice.

RL 22, IMR, H4831 are all in the same class and yes, they work well for standard loads. For reduced loads, something in the W760 RL 17, H380 class is much better.
