Hello, I am new to surplus. Planning to get a M1 Garand. But found I modern 3006 ammo is not safe for 3006. So I just want to know is there any methods can make M1 Garand able to take modern 3006? Thanks for helping!

This question comes up and causes debate every few months. Do your due diligence and research, particularly on the CMP forums. I did nearly 50+ hours of research when building my Garand and then modifying it to match standards. The general consensus is any commercial loading between 110 grain and 180 grain projectiles is fine for the Garand as long as it isn't some ridiculous hot load. They were designed for 173 grain bullets on a healthy charge of powder (M1 Ball). Once you start going into the 200+ grain category, an adjustable gas plug would be an OK idea. I run a Schuster adjustable plug in mine because I have some hot 190 grain long-range loads I wanted to try a while back. Realistically, the heaviest useful projectile in a Garand is something in the 175 grain range for match loads.

If I were you, I would buy the cheapest 30-06 commercial stuff I could find and just run it through if you don't reload.

If you want some modern stuff super-tailored to the Garand, Hornady Garand Ammo is the Holy Grail. A 168 Grain A-Max over 46.5 grains of Varget. They have tailored this load with their CMP, NM, and Garand Match shooting teams and is the best factory Match ammo for a Garand.

I have to agree with the recommendation to reload. You can load 150 grain bullets and have the brass land 3 feet away with the right load. A bit of $$$ to get started but you will be surprised on how fast you recoup that money.

Watch for slam fires due to the floating firing pin.Mine went full auto with federal primers once and it wasn't funny.Use Winchester primers now and it never happened again.

I was running Winchester Super X rounds in my M1 Garand years ago
The ammo was 150gr power point / soft point
The rifle cycled very reliably, and recoil was very controllable
Never noticed any problems with rifle parts when stripping the Garand after firing for cleaning purposes
Firing was done at 100yds and accurate enough
There is some of this exact 30-06 ammo for sale in the EE if you're interested, 84rds in fact at a decent price

Privi is what I have shot for the last many years. Cal. .30 M2, 150 gr bullet @ 2805 fps IMR 4895 was made to fill the 30-06 case up volumetrically. I have shot many
rounds with 48 grains of IMR4895 in Lake City Brass with a 150 gr flat base bullet. Velocity is the key and you will get variations from batch to batch.

***tune it to 2800 fps +- .5 gr

Desperately seeking Shuster...

Well, IDK--I did do a search, and I found a 'Shuster Gas Plug' at 'Midway' that looked to be just the ticket.
There it was, for under 40USD. Lots of glowing reviews--I decided to order one. But after I'd finished completing the order form, and tried to check out, I was prevented from doing so by a robot that refused to acknowledge the existence of Canada!
They didn't exactly give me the "May not ship to Canada" mantra, they just failed to include anywhere outside of the US on their drop-down menu.

I'm going to try MARSTAR next.

If any member can direct me to a vendor (in CANADA) who can provide me with one of these M-1 gas plugs,
please give me a link to their site.
thx

I found that Shuster at Brownells.

Thanks for that tip. Yes, Brownells has been very good to me in the past.
I got a Garand rear sight from them and installed it on my M305 'M-14'--What a difference! Now I can really
hear and feel those 1MOA clicks!

Last year they sent me some very nice(and inexpensive!) "20"rd-style USGI mags for my AR.

Now I'm ordering a Shuster Gas Plug for my Garand. :)

Brownells has good customer service and have been taking care of me for half a century.
CCI makes a special primer for 7,62 ammo that is quite hard, #34 IIRC. .308 and .30/'06.

If you feel like a road trip, I can show you how to reload for the M1 and we can try them out at the local range, 8 minutes away.
I'm currently trying to get a functioning cast bullet load for the M1 that is using a powder coated bullet with no grease grooves or gas checks.
I'm not quite there, but it's looking good.
