Hi, I am looking at an old Browning Auto 5 shotgun. i don't know the serial # so can't date it. from cruising the net the U.S. shotgun sites seem to infer that any Auto 5 with a straight English stock will be pre WWII.

Assuming that it is, I was wondering what the opinion might be in using modern ammo in such a gun? I am thinking of something tha has a little pep to it, such as steel shot (it does have a mod. choke) as well as target loads at the range.

One might ask if I have contacted Browning? Nope, I find them impossible to get on the Phone and I am expecting the same droll answer: " We can't take any responsibility for the use of modern ammo in old firearms". I am not playing a liability game here, just personal safety..........

thanks in advance for any thoughts/comments/experience

Modern ammo is fine, but I would restrict steel shot to a modern barrel designed for steel.

If you are using lead shot, just use the right length and give 'er. If you want to use that A5 as the classy water fowling piece it is,check out NICE shot as a component, or a loading called "classic doubles" developed for keeping thise fine old guns hunting.there may well be other materials for shot options too.none I saw were really reasonable pricewise, let alone as cheap as steel shot loads.i'm talking $2.50-$4.00 per rd. And up and up handloaded.can be more for factory offerings.

THANKS squirel nutz,

I had no idea that thee was ammo like that. i presume i would find it at places like Epps? or maybe Als corner store.
what i like is that there is hope............ always wanted one of these , but if i can't use it, why have it?
I have friends that are just appalled that i actually take my Browning silver Hunter out in the mud - well, i do, and it works really well, all the time.( I just have to point it in the right direction:p) when i get home i pop it apart, wipe it down and swab the bore and it's good to go. a few scratches and such, I don't care. my friends remind me of the folks i used to sell hay to who did not want a scratch on their big bad a** diesel trucks. that is when I am appalled:why own something like that and not use it??? :bangHead:
Rant rant, thanks again - will check out this ammo.
