Anyone else having problems with Marlin Big Bore levers? I have a brand new Marlin 1895 Guide Gun that will not lever rounds into the breech? It is a fine single shot however.

I just pruchased this GEM from Wholesale Sports here in Edmonton and upon the first time out had this problem. I tried both Winchester and Hornady factory ammo with the same results. When watching the action it seems the shell is not being lifted up high enough to feed into the breech. It sits at an angle againist the bolt and your done. If you tip the gun upside down, give it a shake and gently finese the lever it might wiggle it's way in to the breech..

I thought that out the box quality of Marlin Guns was a little better than this.

Anyway, I have brought the gun back to Wholesale Sports this morning and am awaiting a decision from them to either replace the gun with another new one (that hope fully works) so I might be able to use it this year or send the one I have away on warranty which will no doubt take months to repair.

Two years ago I bought a new Weatherby Mark V in 375 H&H which cracked the bolt after 20 rounds. I sent it for warranty and recieved it back about 10 months later repaired with a new bolt.

Seems to me the quality of modern firearms is reaching a new all time low. Anyone else heard of others having problems or I am just having some bad luck?

Every manufacturer has it's off days. It's too bad that it happens to you, but it's bound to happen when guns are produced in the shear numbers they are, off a line. Yes, quality control isn't what it used to be. But in their defense, I don't think they test each gun. Though they should. I think we have a trade off. The guns being produced today are built of the finest materials compared to anything produced in the past. But we also have lawsuits, lawyers, unions and high wages to contend with. Manufacturers have to cut corners to try and turn a profit. And those corners are where we get hung up. Winchester wen't belly up because of this. Their coming back next June with a new model 70. I'm sure they won't allow the same mistake to happen again, but I'm also sure were going to see these same corners there, too.

I bought a GG in SS last summer from wholesale sports. Works good, looks great, but the rear buckhorn sight won't stay up ( I don't use it- I have a 2.5x28 Leupold). Also, the thumb attachment for the hammer came in the box without a set screw. I sent a note to the company, but they didn't respond.:(

It's called the marlin jam, quite a few people complain about it. I would take it to a gunsmith and see if they can fix it and while they are at it smooth the action out a bit. After that I guarantee that you will love it.

Exactly do what Turkeyslayer recommends. It is probably small glitch and will not cost a lot. Try to find out who deals with Marlin repairs and take it down for small tune-up. You may ask them to tune the trigger as well.

The "Marlin Jam" that you are referring to is a common trait of the 1894 not the 1895.

firearms quality in general is getting poor. Cast parts, minimal finish, poor bluing....... etc.

Look at the winchester pre 64's in general. That should say it all.

Hi Again Folks,

Thanks for all the replies, I do appreciate the feedback.
Wholesale Sports decided it was quicker to get me back in the field by replacing the gun. Since I was having issues shooting it with Iron Sights I decided to put a scope on. The one a chose was a Leupold FII - 4x and I had them put it on last night. When I got home I was surpised to see they had installed a Leupold FI- 4x which is not only 28mm vs a 33mm but intended to Rim fire rifles!!

How long do you think this FI would last on a 45\70?
Anyway, I will be one of the first folks in line the morning when they open at 9:00 am. Seems if it's not one thing it's another.

Thanks again

Cam

Sorry to hear your bad luck, but it doesn't suprise me they would do that. Although there are a few of them on here from your store who choose to remain nameless, think they are the cat's meow. :stirthepot2:

Sorry, had to say it. :D

If the scope is a true rimfire model, I wouldn't accept it. However, if it has a 50 yard parallax, and is suited for slug guns or muzzleloaders, that is a different story. Either way, that's not the scope you bought, and you should definatly take it back. I am surprised, however to hear they made good and replaced your rifle. That's good news, and perhaps the store mentality is changing for the better. Good luck getting the scope deal resolved.

Well, I think I am finally ready to roll. I put ona Leupold Rifleman 2x-7x. I wanted to keep costs down so I hope it was a good enough choice.
Thanks again to all for posting your comments. The all are appreciated.

I Ordered one from SIR last month. Got it in Québec province. Rounds could not feed properly from the magazine. Tried 4 brands of ammo. Called Marlin USA and they told me to send it to Long's gunsmith in Ontario. It been there for 2 weeks now. Just hope that it will come back great.

Shame on MArlin to let go rifles like those 1895 GS out of the door. You don't do that to customers. This is not like (''cold Big MAcs`) these are weapons. One of their principle feature is to be repetable. Many GGS have that problem. Shame on you MArlin. I had to pay from my pocket 30 dollars to ship it to a smith that I don't know to repair something that was not suppose to be broken.

Shame on you

Actually that's pretty good service from WSS.... only a flawed gun and the wrong scope....???? Things are looking up for them.

Im surprised they didnt give you an SKS with a Bushnell duct-taped to it......I can see where they would make the mistake:rolleyes:
