I familiar with the Hornady modified cases. You use them with their Modified Case Guage(s) to measure/determine COAL for specific bullet shapes.

Can anyone translate this?

Owe let me.....I speak jive......airport the movie reference.

The hornady modified cases get you damn close for measuring how far from jam you are on the grooves. Much better than the sharpie and cleaning rod method.

Gavin Gear....ultimate reloader on YouTube has a bunch of videos on using hornady's system.

Sooooooo, yew taws the mawdified case at the firearm?
Powker in the muzzle?
Wave figure ates around said ker-pow wid the magickawl brass in yer mitts?

.

Not really.. forget the sharpie but use the cleaning rod and measuring from the muzzle to a closed bolt face and then from the muzzle to the tip of the bullet with the cartridge sitting on the closed bolt face. That is the most accurate method... the modified case is close though.

I've now broke 3 of the hornady oal tools. The part that threads into the modified case is super flimsy aluminum. They have replaced it each time but I wish there was a better alternative. I do make my own modified cases but that's not the reason they keep breaking.

Machine a new piece out of steel maybe? I have one of these, but rarely use it. Mostly I use a rod, a machinist's rule, and a sharpie. - dan

What drill and tap size is it?
I was going to do the same thing.

and yet there are thousands out there who have never broken the super flimsy aluminum tool...

I don't have one of these gizmos, just putting a bullet in a case with light tension and have it sticking out a bit and insert it in the chamber.
Then I gently close the bolt so the bullet gets pushed back into the brass by the lands, then gently open the bolt and measure the total length.
Do this lets say 5 times to double check and then subtract the "jump" you like to have.

Is the hornady jig a lot more accurate?
