Hi there, currently my firearms and simply stored in a solid locked rifle case, and placed out of sight. I am hoping to add more to my collection soon, so I am looking into storage options. Obviously a safe would be the best bet. However with most of my basement now renovated to be a play room for the kidlets, I'm left with what little space I have in the utility room. I don't think I would have room for anything more than an 8 gun cabinet.

All that being said there is an existing corner/ closet area I'm considering closing off and making lockable, adding shelving and racking to accommodate my firearms needs. While trying to research if there are any requirements all I can find are the "guidelines" from the RC's

"(ii) stored in a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked; and"

So I am wondering what "specifically constructed or modified" means.

Has anyone else built their own gun room / closet and what should I use( steel doors,3/4" plywood, type of locking mechanism)?

Any advice will or input will be appreciated
Thanks
Jordan

No clear cut definition of "specifically constructed or modified . " The general consensuses Is:

- Windows (if any) barred.
- Extra studs to bolt safe or cabinet to.
- Plywood (1/2 or 5/8) over the wallboard.
- Solid steel "exterior" type door (not hollow interior wood door).
- Skookum key or combination deadbolt.

There will be some restricted very soon. So it is basically my interpretation of "not broken into easily".

As it is two of the outside walls will be concrete basement walls. Third wall I have to frame, is a thick plywood enough or should I lay expanded steel mesh inside the framing and drywall the outside.

There are no legal specifications.

A common legal interpretation of the "easily" element is that if it requires tools to break into then it isn't easily broken open or into.
