Is it possible to modify a 12" shotgun (like the ones from canadaammo) like this

shotmf4.jpg

That way i can put a mag extension on the end, and maybe some tacticool rails up near the front of the barrel. It would also keep my pump hand away from the projectiles....

Would this be a DIY project?

Also,
anyone know where to buy this forend:

It seems excessive to shorten your barrel and magazine to two rounds , just so you can add a two round extention. A fore end that accepts accessories and a large sling mount that fits the mag nut would do what you want and still let you convert back to a duck gun if the government dictates that. Goto www.brownells.com and check out the LITE MOUNT TECHNOLOGIES 3-RAIL PICATINNY SHOTGUN MOUNT and FALCON INDUSTRIES REM 870 3-RAIL FOREND ASSEMBLY.

the 3rail picatinny mount is kinda what im looking for.. but i couldnt put that on a 12" because there is no where to mount something on the mag.. and i dont want a railed foreend.. id rather have that MCS one.

Well its not a big deal. when i get my 12" from canadaammo i will take a look see and decide if its within my abilities.

also, as far as waterfowling and that.. a 2+1 is all you can legally have anyway, so i figured have it that way and get a 28" barrel and it is a good duck gun.. throw on a mag extension and the 12" barrel and i have a good bush gun.

Plus then i can put a bayonet on my shotgun haha.

To modify like in the picture you will have to shorten the mag to move it back and you will have to remove and then move the mag bracket on the barrel back .This is okay but now no other barrels will fit unless modified the same way. A lot of expensive work on an inexpensive gun. If you have machining and welding skills and equipment , go for it.

what about instead of reattaching the mag bracket - i use a mag clamp instead.. like the ones used on a magazine extension? seems to me that it would serve the same purpose?

i had emailed canada ammo.. and they said that wasnt possible :( that was my #1 choice

and a 12" barrel would still have to be modified to fit on the 8.5" mag length. so either way i still would have to mod the gun. id go for an 8.5" but its illegal to hunt in bc with under 12" barrel, and i want to drag this gun around with me while bowhunting. its a lot easier to justify having a legal shotgun over one that is not legal for hunting while out hunting.

wow, that seems like a crazy amount of work for such a small mod.
its not that easy to remove and re-solder the mag bracket solid and square without damaging the barrel - and then you have to clean up and refinish/repark the entire barrel. like CanAm said its not really an easy DIY job.

why not work with what you have? i admire your determination to get it just the way you want it, but odds are high youre going to end up bubbaing the hell out of the gun. IMO its better to get a solid setup thats 95% the way you like it than a bubbad to hell gun thats 100% :)

Wildfoot, I have a much easier solution to your problem. Get the 12.5" shotgun with the 4 rd mag tube. Then track down an MCS forend assy (good luck) and install it on the shotgun (no mods required). This will leave a small portion of the mag tube exposed, it is just big enough for those short 3 sided picatinny rails. I've seen a photo of a shotgun done just like this and it looked pretty good if that's the route you want to take.

and a 12" barrel would still have to be modified to fit on the 8.5" mag length.

I was thinking I could buy an 8.5" shotgun and just pick up a 12.5" or 14" barrel down the road, but I never considered the mag mount location. At what barrel length does the mag mount no longer "move"? Could I get a 12.5" shotgun from CanadaAmmo and easily switch to a 14" barrel?

Yes, 12.5" is as short as you can go without making the mag tube shorter than standard.

I've already tried to find the MCS forend... Remington will not sell them as parts; they don't want imitations of the MCS floating around :)
