I have an older Savage model 10 in .308 with a heavy barrel, oversized bolt knob and blind magazine. I would like it to take replaceable magazines. Can I just change the stock, such as replacing the existing stock with a Magpul stock, that takes AICS magazines? Are there any other modifications that I would need to make?

Thanks for any help.

A chassis or stock that accepts AICS is a drop in, simple solution.

If your savage has the bolt release on top (right side back of receiver when you're behind the rifle) you can switch out the bottom metal though in rare instances that may require some tinkering with the stock.

Some options:

Personally, unless you know how to bed a stock and love your savage stock, it's prob easiest (but more expensive) to go with a chassis.

IMPORTANT: Also if you have the bottom bolt release by the trigger guard, your stock / chassis options are limited and you cannot use the bottom metals linked above

Changing the stock might be my best option. Putting bottom metal in would require cutting a hole and inletting the bottom of the stock which I would probably butcher with a Dremel.

i had 2 savages. 1 with internal mag and one with propietary savage mags.

Went and replaced both stocks with MDT LSS XL and a MDT XRS chassis. Would recommend.
Both now take AI pattern mags. Only modification to rifles was prying off the old internal mag body on one of them.
