I posted this in the black powder section but I think as I got no responses that maybe it belongs here.

I have a TC pro hunter and I was grouping consistent 1 3/4 inch groups, the next year it was all over the place. I bought new powder as a friend of mine said the same thing happened to him and all is well again. My question is I have put the pellets (case and all) int a large zip lock bag with a 1/2 pound of desiccant. Will it reverse its bad ways and return to normal, or is it a waste of time to dry it out?

Thanks for your input,
Chad

I started out using pellets, but had so many misfires and hang fires, I soon got rid of them. One day while I was shooting the ML, I used 12 primers to fire 7 shots...Loose powder ( I use 777 ) is much easier to tailor a load with and is way more consistent than pellets can ever be...If the pellets were damp or moist, they would not fire at all.

Other than that, make sure you are cleaning your barrel the same every time, and there is no gun cleaner in it...What bullet are you using?

I was using Hornady sst-ml's 250gr I believe. They shot great with new powder every time. I think as long as I store my powder in a desiccant bag in the off season I will be okay. I should try the loose powder but the pellets are so convenient. Your not kidding that crud ring sucks.

I use the 250 SST as well. I pre-measure a few charges of loose to carry while hunting, just as convenient as pellets...

My buddy loved the pellets as well, till one day he ran them over the chrony. Some shots were at 1800 fps, some at 1500fps, one was as low as 800 fps. The low shots were the result of only one or two pellets igniting out of his 3 pellet charge. He has since switched to loose and it shoots consistent every time.

Once the powder has become damp and inconsistent, I would never trust it for an actual hunting situation again. Even though you tried to dry it out, why take the chance.

Maybe for playing at the range....
