Wondering if I would really notice the difference between the last Monarch 3 2.5x10x42 and the new Prostaff 5 2.5x10x40 ? Anybody compare them side by each?

I have no experience with the Prostaff but I own 2 versions of the Monarch 3 and I have nothing but good things to say about both. Except maybe the Nikoplex reticle doesn't do it for me, but it works. Nikon makes some very nice glass for a good price.

Biggest difference is the Monarch scope is a one piece build where the Prostaff 5 is still a two. Monarch is more rugged if you're not the most gentle with your stuff. Quality of the glass is slightly better in the Monarch as well but as mentioned above. That's up to you to decide if it's worth the price difference.

Apparently you are right about there being two versions of the "Monarch 3" and lucky me got the early version....back it went. I don't know about anyone else but I think it's dishonest to sell two versions of a scope with one name. Guess I should edgumacated myself a little more on them before ordering....back to the drawing board.

If you're referring to the original Monarch series, they are a very good line of scopes as well, I'm not sure if they are as sturdy a build as the new 3 series though. But the legacy Monarchs get rave reviews as well.

There are actually 22 variations of the Monarch 3, different magnifications and reticles. I wouldn't say it's dishonest at all, Monarch 3 is just the name of the line of scopes with enough variations to meet different people's needs. I did a lot of research before hand to decide on the scopes I purchased. Due diligence I guess :/

No I mean when you order a 2.5x10x42 Monarch 3 there is an older model and current model. Current model has zero reset turrets and says "Monarch 3" on it as can be seen here http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/.../6761/MONARCH-3-2.5-10x42-Matte-Nikoplex.html
The so called Monarch 3 I got had the old coin slot turrrets and simply said "Monarch" on it like my older Monarch scopes do... Don't get me wrong I know they are good scopes it's just when you think you are buying something current and that's not what you receive its a little annoying. Anyway no big deal, life goes on...

Hmmm, that sounds like someone screwed up at the warehouse. In that case I'd be a little annoyed too, but hopefully you get what you originally intended.

I got educated by a Nikon Rep. There is the "Monarch III" and the new "Monarch 3". I was informed that Nikon is in the transition phase of changing between the older "III" and new "3".
Nobody made a mistake but me as I assumed they were the same scope.

That is frustrating to say the least. I really dislike the fact that scopes can have such similar names even though their technology or features might be completely different.

I just don't get why they cannot be named something else. Like Monarch 3 and Monarch 3T (turrets) or something to differentiate. Or even simly a new name. Like the Nikon Emperor series or something.
