Monkey Tails

interesting articles; I repaired a monkeytail several years ago and shot several shots out of it. I loaded the gun by dropping a 45-70 slug in the "chamber" then loose black powder and finally a wad punched with a leather punch from a 1/3 thickness lubricated shotgun cushion wad. The gun was accurate and had absolutely no blowback that I could see. I was able to remove and recuse the wad for 3 shots before it needed replacing. I was quite favourably impressed with the gas sealing abilities but am also surprised how manufacture continued until well into the centerfire cartridge era.

Can't remember the source but I believe the guns did not fire dependably using standard musket caps and instead used a much hotter cap to guarantee ignition. The cap flashes roughly into the middle of the powder charge rather than at the rear
