I use open sights on all my shotguns and rifles, save for my Mosin with a matching 3.5x PU scope.

As such, I'd like something lightweight and unassuming to scope cut blocks and ridges here on Vancouver Island. I don't anticipate having to look too far ahead beyond 300 yards, mostly 100-200 yards.

I have seen Vortex Solo 8x36 monoculars touted as solid choices. Any other scopes for me to consider?

Years ago I bought a bushnell monocular because of the small size and weight . And because I am almost blind in one eye. The optics were not to bad and I still carry it in my truck. But I find a monocular is harder to hold than a binocular.
For a light compact unit I have gone to a compact binocular. Mine ar Leoupld 10X.

I would go for a small bino if I were you. Put them in a good harness and you will never know you're wearing them and the handier they are to you, the more you'll use them and the more successful you'll be

I use 8X Vortex Solo with the ranging reticle. It's good, decent glass for the price and compact enough to not take up much real estate on your belt or backpack. The ranging reticle is handy but you need to have a very steady hold for it to be accurate. If you were wanting to glass for more than a few minutes at a time, I'd suggest binoculars. But for quick looks, this monocular works well.

I had the chance play with a Hummingbird 7-22x50 ED Micro Spotting Scope... it was pretty nice
