Working towards picking up another 35 Whelen (I gotta stop selling em off)

Anyone have any experience with Montana Rifles?. The AVR/SS in 35 Whelen looks pretty sweet.

I've got one on the way from Prophet River in .260 Rem. I should have it in a couple of weeks. I'll be sure to give you my thoughts, if you're interested. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what it's like. I've read a lot of good things about the action - hopefully the rest is all good as well!

I have a Montana 1999 in 505 Gibbs.. It is far from safari ready.Sometimes the cartridge will pop out of the magazine before the extractor has a hold of it.Then when you try to chamber that round the extractor will not snap over the rim so you have a major jam...Flat nose solids hang up on the feed ramp but RN and Barnes TSX feed fine...The front sling eye should be on the barrel instead of on the fore end..Montana recommends you use 2 CZ front rings to mount the scope but that arrangment failed after very few rounds...Accuracy is very good ,probably1.5MOA or less..It has a very nice trigger that breaks at 3lbs every time...All in all I like the rifle well enough to order another one in 338 Lapua...If it has the same issues I know a gunsmith who can fix it....john

I found mine to be a disappointment. It would close on a field gauge and showed extreme primer flattening with anything more than starting loads. It's a few years old and a new benchmark barrel fixed it. A friend picked up a 300 WSM at a SCI recently and wishes he never saw it. He polished the action to get it to feed halfway decent, and it shows pressure signs early. When he finally got a load that seemed safe it clocked 2650 fps with 180s.

I wouldn't trade a M70 for ten of them.

My .375 is here , It looks good and appears to function fine, finish and fit is good, fits me well and weight bare bones is 7lbs 3oz , trigger @ 2.5lbs. from the factory.
Stock is nicer than my old Win 70 extreme weather and does not feel clubby at all. Barrel is fat with a #5 contour.

Reloading components / scope and talleys are not here yet but I'll take some pics and post up some impressions once Ive had a chance to load and shoot it.

Well the Initial results are positive, cant find a single fault with it for the first 10 rounds down range.

Feeds like a fat kid eating smarties and the big claw grabs the round as is should, extraction /ejection is first rate and we've worked our way up to 73.5 of RL15 with the 270 Woodleigh PPSN crimped in the cannelure with nice rounded primer corners , no flattening and no sign of pressure whatsoever. The two groups shot( 73 & 73.5 )each measured 1.375 " for three rounds with the wind gusting 15-20 knots on a windy afternoon. I plan to try some IMR 4064 and H4350 in the days to come.
Its a solid rifle , the stock fits me very well and the decelerator soaks up recoil better than expected , the new bushnell elite 4500 2.5x10x40 is clear , bright and appears to be a winner and it should be a good north coast pissing down rain bear buster.
