Last August I started a thread here about the Montreal Skeet Club. At the time I said that an entry fee of $50, plus $16 per round, plus the shells was a steep price to pay for someone wishing to visit this club.

Well, I was in Montreal last week so my brother-in-law and I went for a visit on April 3, and I want to update my post and correct a couple of things.

First, the cost of a visit really is $50 per person and I still find that steep. I was told that the club had just over 200 members (membership is $500 per year) so I guess somebody has to pay for the upkeep.

Second, the cost of a round is actually $13 not $16, but contrary to my initial statement this includes a box of shells. I must have misunderstood the person I spoke with on the phone back when I inquired about a visit. They will bring down the cost of a round to $6 if you wish to use your own shells. However, the gentleman at the counter said the club would prefer everyone use the shells they supply but he didn't make a fuss when I said I would use my own (since I brought them all the way there to begin with). The shells they provide are Challenger Light target loads, and I was told that Challenger Ammunition owns the club.

The facilities themselves are pretty decent: Sporting, Five Stand, Skeet and Trap. We shot 10 rounds each of trap and skeet. The members were friendly, but that’s the same in most clubs I’ve been to, and I made a couple of new friends. The club house was very nice and is licensed so we were able to enjoy a couple of cold beers before heading home $300 poorer :)

Would I go back? Probably, but I would still be unhappy having to pay the $50, maybe at some point Challenger will reduce this amount.

Next time I visit, July or August, we'll try to get to Valleyfield and La Roue du Roy, I hear they're pretty good clubs as well.

Thanks for the soapbox.

"an entry fee of $50,"

I'm a little puzzled by this. What do you get for that $50.00???? Never heard of such a thing.

Valleyfield is a good little Club...with a great background for shooting skeet. Mario Quesnel and Max Lemay I believe are the driving forces behind this Club....both very nice guys.

Montreal Skeet is a private club. I don't think they are looking to encourage people to come and shoot for the day.

For $50, you get to come in and try out the facility before deciding if you want to pay $500.

La Roue is similar (private club). I'm not sure what their visitor fee is, or if even if they allow visitors to walk in.

PM me, and I will take you as my guest to the premier Canadian clay shooting club, La Roue du Roy. It is the first club to have sporting, FITASC and Modern skeet. It has had and still has the largest sporting shoots in Canada. The 1989 DU had 604 entries. Last weekend's openning shoot, the April Fools, had 132 shooters. You can shoot any ammo as long as it is target loads. It has an auotmated sporting course that for now is 12 stations but will expand to 16, soon. It also has a FITASC Parcour with 8 machines, Old Fashion!

Slings on shotguns are not permited nor any nasty tshirts. There is a limit of two shells loaded for any clay target. I will be in Europe for all of July, but we can meet up to shoot, wine and dine in August.

Regards,
Henry;)

club pionnier near repentigny (l'assomption) has sporting clays for $25.
