I was recently within a few hours of Mooncoon's home, we had talked online a bit and he had been a wealth of knowledge on old guns. Many times he has helped me with how to on gun projects and old gun know how and tidbits. So, I decided I would try to meet up with him while I was close by. My family(wife and two sons) was with me. So, I drove the couple of hours and met up with Moon and Mrs. Coon. They are incredibly nice people and we had a great visit. In the too short three or so hours we had, he showed me some amazing old guns and rifles. I have never met anyone with more old gun knowledge and home smithing and restoration experience. You would be hard pressed to think of an old gun he didn't have now or past or a part of on-site. His shop is a treasure of gun tools and tidbits for old firearms. It was about as much fun as a gun tinkerer and old gun enthusiast can legally have. He makes his own ML locks and I can't think of much more of a demanding home task.
He is just an excellent guy and I am very happy to have met up with him. I appreciate the time and enormous amount of information he gave me that day and in many conversations online. Thank-you very much Mooncoon. I have a healthy respect for him and it's obvious to see his experience and knowledge in his posts. I just wanted to say thanks and let the rest of you know that he is every bit as decent as he seems online.
Take care,
Rob

I've considered Mooncoon THE definitive source for info on anything related to old guns for quite some time. Its hard to imagine someone with more knowledge. We are certainly lucky to have him here on Nutz.

Doug is The Man in my books as having a wealth of Knowledge on old firearms, self taught machinist and metalworker/blacksmith.
We are most furtunate having him, ANY time there is a How does, or What does, or, is it a shooter ? Doug is The Man.
Doug has personally bailed me out on a few firearm fixes.
My hat's off to you Doug .

Cheers nessy.

I will have to get a larger hat :>) my head is swelling. I am greatly flattered; thank you all. I should also point out there a several others equally or more knowledgeable on the list.

cheers Doug

Yes but Doug most cant take a chunk of Scrap metal and turn it into a thing of Beauty like you can :p

See ya sunday eh!

So did he show you and old "North west trade gun" ? I traded that thing with him. Felt kinda bad at the time as I just couldn't fathom how such a rusty old thing could be of interest to anyone ... Last I heard of him he seemed to be pretty pleased with it.

When ever I see Dougs truck at the range, I have to go have a look at what ever neat toys he may be shooting. I've had the pleasure of knowing Doug for many many years. Everytime I see him he's got some unique gun he's playing with. A wealth of knowledge, and a very kind gentleman. Always willing to share his knowledge, or shoot one of his newest guns :D

One of these days I may even try and wrestle the 38-55 he always lets me shoot at the turkey shoots away from him.

Dougs just one of those guys you have to talk to when ever you see him. One of a few I know who I would actually call gun gurus. Those people who you can ask just about any gun related question, and he has an answere.

Woodtick (another nanaimo B.P. shooter) is another of those fine individuals. Always a wealth of knowledge.

I'd have to say a big thanks to both of these guys. Both have helped me out on many occasions.

Marc S.

Ps. Doug I'll see you at the gunshow this weekend. Hopefully before everyone else has a chance to buy up all your for sale stuff.

That is one of my favourite trades :>) Apart from shooting it occasionally, I take to schools each year for Metis awareness days. I think it really helps to be able to show kids the real thing.

Glad you still are happy with the trade. I still haven't shot any of your's (for those that are unaware, the trade involved an antique double barrel W. Moore shotgun in firing condition AND a humongous .54 cal patch and ball Pennsylvania-styled musket (percussion) for that thing, and it didn't even have a lock!). They sure ended up as great living-room decorations though.

Since I'm not really comfortable with firing old-style BP guns on my own for the first time I'm still waiting for a knowledgable gunnut to show me how to use the things without them blowing up in my face. For the record, they are among my most prized possessions and get a regular cleaning including a healthy dose of CLP :D .

et Doug a few year's back at our rendezvous.
Fantantistic fella, and a whole bunch of fun, also!
Hopefully I can gettcha on the river for a boat ride next summer!
