MOOSE AT 550 yards

Hi just wondering if anyone could tell me the best rifle, load, scope for knocking down a large bull moose at 550 to 600 yards. Have a 30-06 pump and did not want to take the shot being afraid it wouldn't have enough when it got there and did not want to wound it and turn it into wolf bait. Thanks

:D
Some hunters are capable of shooting big game at 500+ yards.

Then fact that you don't know what type of equipment you need to make that kind of shot tells me that you are NOT one of the above mentioned hunters.

Don't feel bad.......neither are most of the rest of us.

My gang & I hunt moose from tree stands in the huge open timber clear cuts in Northern Ontario.

We walk quietly over brushed out trails using flashlights to our stands with our rifles legally encased at least one half hour before day break.

It is a given under these circumstances that the tree stand isn't going to move.....they usually stay pretty close to the tree they are nailed to.

On cold, crispy mornings, where walking sounds like you are "square dancing" on Pringles potato chips, I've seen moose on the edge of the cut from the stand and you aren't going to dismount the stand & stalk any closer & not give your position away to every moose within 5 miles.........it's either you take the shot presented or you don't.

Under these circumstances I've seen moose shot by members of my gang (including me) at 500+ yard ranges.

We all use accurate, top quality magnum caliber (.300 Win, .300 Wby. 7mm STW, one guy shoots a Sako in .375 H&H) rifles with really good glass (mostly Leupolds and a couple of top end Bushnells/Bausch & Lombs). We all hand load and we all shoot a lot & practice shooting at all practical ranges & have been hunting this way in clear cuts for many years.
