If you are in the bush in good moose country in the September, it is hard to find a noise that won't call in a moose! The smaller bulls, like the one in the picture that is shot, are particularily niave. Foresters working in the bush measure by using (they did, but not any more) a steel tape, two chains long, about 50 yards. One man is at each end of the tape and they have to call to each other. The proper call was "chain," but this evolved into a "Hep." When they were working in the bush in northern BC in the fall, bull moose would come to them everyday! They complained about being held up in their work, by the damn moose.
One fall I was working at a mobile camp in the bush with another man. One September morning I took the morning off to hunt moose. Starting at daylight I carefully worked my way through the willows and poplar trees of the river flat, seeing lots of moose sign, but no moose. Finally, I looked at my watch and it was eleven o'clock, barely time for me to get back and ready to take over the bulldozer at 1:00.
I took off at a very fast walk, crashing through everything I came to. Suddenly I heard another crashing noise, and a continuous grunting sound. Only thirty yards away was a bull moose, overtaking me! He got to 25 yards before I got my rifle in action and dropped him in his tracks.
