Well we are moving our moose camp this year to a new spot, and was wondering what you guys look for in territory for moose habitat. Lots of boggs/sloughs, bush, or hilly country? Thanks

I've seen them in both types of areas, any chance of scouting and finding out where the most moose sign is?

Burns, find some recent burns with young regrowth and you've found moose heaven. I've always done well near beaver ponds as well.

We are going up 2 days before the season, so we wont have much time. It is about a 6 hour drive up to were we can hunt. I do know that there is some loggin up there, we are hoping on finding something that was logged out 5-10 years ago, it should be good then.

Strange as it may seem I found the best moose was one year old cuts. There's a large flat plant that grows that they must think is candy.
Other good spots are marshs, burns anywhere there's new growth.

3-5 year old blocks or burns tend to have good regen in them by that time and good cover starting back in, remember a moose isnt generaly going to be out in the clear wide open all the time mostly they have cover a short ways away, yes beaver dams and ponds are a great idea as well especialy a chain of them with creeks running between them and old growth forest around

here is a example I have from the hunt we just came home from:

water source, food source, cover source , this medow actualy runs about 6 KMs long and has several little islands in it as well as lots of indents into old growth forest to escape ....and thats exactly what the bull did we were after here, the cow lead him in behind a tiny island and up into a indent into the timber leaving us no shooting lane at first light

Look for moose turds. They're a sure sign there are moose in the area. Treacks are good too but not as reliable as actually seeing the moose.

Half the fun of a new area is scouting the lay of the land. Enjoy!

There area changes with the season. Summer months, until early September, they feed on water lily roots in ponds or lakes that have the lily pads.
It takes a lot of feed to keep them going, such as willows and young poplar. Most important thing to look for is feed they like, with sloughs, little lakes, swamps, heavier green bush, etc, nearby.
Wintering grounds are old burns grown up with young poplar and willows.
