Ok, the week is over, I'm back.
Monday morning, the boys saw six moose, naturally, we had no adult tags
But one was a calf, so, we got some meat out of Monday anyway.
Personally, I didn't see a moose the whole season, I did see more deer than anyone else though, at four.
Big weather front moved in for the middle of the week, it poured rain for two days straight, water levels went nuts, the creek was up a foot and a half, and the moose evaporated. not one more moose was seen until thursday.
One of the guys spotted a cow.
So for the week, we as a group saw seven moose, a dozen deer, scads of grouse, a couple of foxes up close and personal ( more on that later) and had a hell of a good time hunting rain or shine.
The cost of this camp was a hundred bucks for the week, and that included re-siding the camp this summer, as well as our brush clearing bee.
The whole thing is a forty five minute drive from home, and we have cell phone coverage too.
I know, hunting up north, spending thousands on the hunt, and all that goes with it, been there, done that, and came home empty too.
I'll be eating moose calf this winter.... will you? :dancingbanana:

Sounds like a fantastic time to me Bob! All I did last week was work. So as far as I'm concerned you guys won the lottery. Compared to me. My dad was supposed to be back from Kirkland lake today. He's not home yet so maybe they got one down this a.m. I hope. Congrats on the nice hunt you had. Take care.

Dave.

Ok, the stroy on the fox.
I went for a tour on a new area, got myself out there about four miles from camp, and realised at that point that I had niether compass nor GPS (real bright eh?).
Anyways, no big deal, as all thwe ridges in the area run roughly NE to SW. I had no issues getting back.
I crossed to the next ridge, whereI could see huge ravens circling where I presumed the previous days gut pile would be found.
Hoping to find a bear in the area, I aproached very quietly. There was a small movement ahead, and quickly, there appeared a red fox. The little guy had no white on the tip of his tail, but had the usual black feet. On he came. At twenty feet, it was apparent that the white tip on his tail was indeed there, but was soaked in blood, he was fat as a pig, he'd been feeding on the gut pile. (No it wasn't a female) he got to within ten feet, and passed without seeing me. Ears flat back against his head, because it was pouring rain.
Closest I've been to a fox that isn't conditioned to mankind.

Those anti hunters don't see the benefits that a good gut pile can do. The ravens were huge. No idea what else fed on it. The gut pile was gone totally in four days.

Congrats on the calf John.
No moose in S Ont eh!! We have 3 living on our deer hunt property!
At $40 for a tag application & in 57 zone that only allows you to enter the draw for a calf or adult too!!

Thousands for a N Ont moose hunt thou???
Mine used to average $500 for the week including fuel!

Yup, I know a group that flies in north of Superior. Get tags every year no sweat, but don't always get their moose. Weather sucks, have to pay a guide that mostly drinks their beer.. they are not happy. They are going to try a different outfitter next year.

My deer sighting was cool too.
i was sitting on a log when i heard a noise to my right and behind me. Slowly turning I saw a doe emerge from the bush, followed by another, and then one more. They walked tail down not twenty feet from my neon orange suit. and vanished across the same ravine I shot my moose from last year.
About an hour later, the wind had shifted a bit. I heard another noise behind me, along the same trail, a buck with a decent rack aproached. Suddenly there was a loud snort, and he launched himself across the ravine like a missile tail up. No way could i have even got my rifle up for that one, had he been in season.

congrat,s on a good hunt jyc...good to hear you got some meat for the freezer..
i just got word from the guy we were hunting with ,on our trip...he said a few moose were seen..they took a small bull and a calf, then a deer for good luck...
he claims the moose are yarding up early..any one else see or believe this?

JYC:

We had a bull tag and filled it along with a calf tag on monday. I had a chance at a calf on thursday, but when I brought up my rifle, the batteries in my holosight were dead  .

In all we saw 15 moose, 1 bear and 22 deer over the week. I saw 4 moose myself, and my brother-in-law (who shot the 55" bull) saw 5 on monday afternoon.

One of our better hunts.

Good going Rick. Glad to hear you are eating moose this winter.
How old was the battery in the holosight?
Do you find you get less battery life out of the holosight?
I had a red dot for a bit, and battery life was always on my mind. Then, I left it on by accident, and it was still OK, and running when I checked it a couple of weeks later. Still, who knows with batteries?

no one cares about the hunt. Get crackin' filling up the articles section! ;)

Just kidding... at 100 bucks it sounds like you had it pretty good. How did your meals go?

JYC:

I think the batteries may have been weakening for a while and I didn't recognize the problem.

I'd bought these batteries last fall, but hadn't put them in 'till this spring. I'd used them for 2 or 3 target shoots with no problems.

On the sunday before the hunt I'd turned it on and then noticed it seemed to be off, but I couldn't turn it back on 'till I'd shut it off and then turned it on. On the day of the hunt, the hologram was bright and clear right up to when I tried to shoot the calf. Later, I turned it off and on and it came back up - for a short while, then faded out. Unfortunately I lost the replacement batteries I was carrying with me, so I couldn't verify for certain that it was a battery and not a sight problem. This is something I'll check out after the deer hunt, when the smoke clears.

There are few things closer to my heart than defeating the Liberals and c68. But if anything is, it's the big game hunt.
The food was spectacular.
I am waiting for the recipe for the hash brown casserole we had. Steaks, pineapple glazed ham.... Lots of goodies!
