Hey moose hunters,

Do any of you hunt moose in these WMU's? They all reside around Algonquin Park.
46 runs along the Georgian Bay coast throughout the Parry Sound area.

Anyway, I'm looking for ideas for our 2009 hunt, and there seems to be tags available in these areas.

The question is, firstly, is there moose in these regions, what is the hunting pressure like AND is there ample crown land to hunt on?

If anyone has information, anything at all, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I know fella's that hunt in 54, and its a mad house around there in Moose season. They're local, but every cidiot from Toronto to Ottawa is there, and the season is only 6 days. Literally 200 people hunting about 3000 acres of Crown. One big pumpkin patch.

Honestly, if you can go further, do it. BTW some tags there, but the numbers are down for this year, from 160 to 120 Bull tags available, and 1200 people applying for them. Guaranteed group size is 10 guys in pool 1 for bull, 14 for cow.

Also, south end of 54 is Park regulated, and most of the area is what they call "Big Game Camps". Only the guys that lease those areas are permitted to hunt there. The "Day Use" area is the 3000 acres I was talking about, and its literally day use only, you can't camp overnight there.

If you do go to 54, might be best to go to Huntsville side of the park.

I was part of a group in area 46, in the Point au Baril area, but haven't gone the past few years (can't get the time off work). There are plenty of moose in the area. The boys shot a cow and 2 calves last year. Plenty of crown land in the area. I suggest you give yourself lots of scouting time before you hunt. It's a great area for deer and large black bear as well.

My family owns property in the Go Home Lake area in Gibson Township which is bordering Georgian Bay in the south end of 46.

There are moose there, but the numbers are not great. I did spot a large bull last year near 12-mile bay which is a little further north. One gang I know have realtively good success in the MacTier area.

If you are going to hunt in 46, I would say farther north is better. I have heard of decent success rates between Parry Sound and Point-Au-Baril. Keep im mind as well that the whole area is loaded with bears (and I mean the damn things are everywhere) so if you end up in 46 I would highly recommend that you all have bear tags.
