2,423 permits issued

But the province's forests ministry said in a statement that there remains "only a handful of reports" of wildlife killed, including one black bear, some wild horses in the Chilcotin and a couple of moose in the Cariboo region.

Forests Minister Doug Donaldson said in an interview that none of the 40 radio collared cow moose in the region were killed due to fires, but determining the extent of the wildlife devastation is imperative.

"We've already instituted some tools over concerns of moose populations and we're working closely with the Tsilqot'in national government to estimate and get a better handle and assessment of the impact that occurred because of these fires on wildlife," he said.

The provincial government issued 2,423 limited entry hunt permits for moose this year, which the forest ministry said is a reduction from previous years.

The forests ministry said roughly 60 per cent of moose hunting licences issued in the Cariboo region, which includes the Chilcotin, are set aside for First Nations, with the remaining number allocated to other resident hunters and guide outfitters.

"It is important to note that not all licensed hunters are successful, and while harvest rates vary year-to-year, on average, only one-third of (limited entry hunt) authorizations are successful," the ministry said.

Do you mean 60% are set aside for first nations? Or 2,423 moose LEH's for the province?
A group hunt might have 4 hunters with 2 moose LEH's
Sounds right to me..

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. We have 2 moose LEHs amongst 4 hunters. But is that correct 60% of 2423 total for FNs?

yeah that is a bit of a shock.. But when FN's submit a old style card they were to write FN on the top...
You can x2 or 3 the # of moose FN will take
I've talked to a chief and his son in the bush.. They had a black and grizz skinned out..
And between moose, bears and salmon.. that is how they make their living
And trapping..

Man - 5% of the population gets 60% of the moose tags? I might have to submit a blood sample to ancestry.ca to see if I have a hint of Indigenous.

Then you can look for a Metis designation.. I think they have the same rights as status FN??
Not sure on that .. I think there is or was a supreme court case??
Maybe someone else can way in...

Incorrect. Still need a license, tag and need to follow regs. There may be exceptions when hunting in traditional territory but there is essentially no recognition of that, especially in BC because this is not their traditional territory. Metis largely come from the Red River Valley in Manitoba and Quebec. You are thinking of the Powley case. (studied law in my former life).

The Indigenous peoples, under law, have special rights. After all, they were here first. We took the land, the wealth, the industry and segregated them to small reserves. They don't even own the land they live on. They have very few perks. Medication, education funding, hunting and fishing for sustenance are among them. Sorry, but immigrants (all non-first nations) are not treated equally, and never will be in some of those respects. Think of the First Nations as a completely separate entity than other Canadian citizens. You don't have to agree. It is the way it is.

I am a registered meti and still have to buy a license and tags. I've veen told I don't need a migratory bird license (tag?) but I don't hunt birds and have not looked in to it.
