Story:

Hunting with a Client in a larger cutblock. had just walked in and made a stand on a small rise in the landscape and began to call. young 3x3 moose came out about 500yrds away on the far treeline. A few more calls and it was comming towards us with intent. at 150yrds Client fired once, hitting the animal low and skimming the bottom "tip" of the heart. Moose turned and took a few quick steps toward a marsh filled draw 100yrds to our right, so i stood up and let one fly. upon getting hit the Moose "rippled", went strait legged, and fell over. Photo's below show entry/exit. pay particular attention to the complete lack of meat damage (for the Big Bore bashers)

Looks like it was hit with a spear, just minus the stick!!! I always thought big round big hole, but not since some of your previous pictures caused me to do some reading, all I need now it the funds to get my own 45-70!!!

Only Bullet I have recovered from this rifle. 350gr Hornady FN @ 2150fps.

Cow moose client Shot in Armpit (animal Facing shooter). Moose spun and was shot by me quartering away @ 70yrds. Bullet penitrated over 4ft of moose. broke 2 ribs, shoulder blade and was found in a "bulge" on the offside hide. recovered weight 214grs.

Beautiful pics! I love my handloaded 45-70!:)
As a note, Amphibious, it appears that bullet hit no bone.....I had the same results with a Horn 350gr FN on a whitetail from 15 feet this year when bullet hit no bone....sure dropped him in his tracks though...I think hitting bone would create a bit more damage due to secondary projectiles (bone fragments) as in the pics above...

first animal, no bone on the way IN. broke a rib on the way out. shot a 7'1" bear through both shoulders with an exit and meat damage was still minimal with that bullet. shattered both humerous. don;t think I'll ever shoot anything else out of that rifle :D

Good pics, I took my .450 Marlin out and shot a buffalo at 85 yds. The exit hole wasn't a lot larger than the entrance. I shot it in the head and it didn't flinch, it just dropped immediately. I used the same 350 grain Hornady round. I bought the 1895 Marlin Guide Gun for Grizzly protection. After seeing what it can do against the massive skull of a buffalo, I'm convinced I made the right choice.

I shot a deer this year with my 45-70, and it literally cut it in half. It was a runing shot at about 50 yards ,and it hit the top of the lungs, and took out the spine. (Huge wound) The deer looked lit it was cut with a dado blade through the back. No bloodshot, it just looked like the deer was literally sawed in half.
The bullet passed through... Suprise :)

Nope, honestly, I was using the factory 300 gr Winchester HP loads. I had a box, and nothing else rolled for it other than some 500 gr hardcasts.
So Isighted it in, and took her out.
I wasnt throwing the 500's that at a little deer :)
If I recall correctly they do just shy of 1800 FPS out of my guide gun.
I hadnt chronied it in a few years...
But it was a beautiful bang flop :)

I tested some of those Hornady 300gr HP's. I would NEVER use them for game. pretty much a useless bullet. the 405's Rems are very explosive too, if driven to max speeds.
