I am going to get my hunting card this month, and I have the opportunity to go moose hunting in northern Ontario, once I get it. My largest bore rifle is my 303. But I am more comfortable with my 6.5x55 swede sporter. Is this a suitable choice for the swamp donkey or should I convince the wife I need something bigger(... for my safety of course!)

Thanks!

YES,

what you have is adequate, both 6.5x55 and 303 will kill a moose.

But think of the poor moose it deserves to be shot with something more powerfull. Oh and think of your safety them big old moose can get downright cantankerous, you need someting more suitable for dangerous game :D

my go to moose gun is a 300WM :D

The Ontario people just live too far from you to have you guys figured out.
But we are close enough to have you thoroughly pegged!

Ole swamp donkey doesn't care a bit what you shoot. That 6.5 will knock him down right well when you place a decent bullet in the right place. I know this to be a fact, since I have shot several moose with various 6.5's, including the 6.5x55 Swede. I have shot a lot of moose, and don't regard them as being particularly difficult to kill. An Elk is more resilient than is a moose, and Elk will not survive a well placed 6.5 bullet, either. Eagleye.

right :p

hell any chance to add another rifle to my modest collection is good :D

While I have 3 main go to hunting rifles 300WM, 25-06, 22-250, I have backups 30-30, 7mmRM, 308, 303, and I'm always looking for more. Add to this my military rifles and its a nice little collection. :D

like golf you could play the whole game with one club if you had to but you would have to compromise and not do as well as the next guy with a full bag of clubs.

now I would add to my current lineup I think I need a 7-08 and something in 6.5 and someday a nice custom in 416 weatherby :D

you can never have too many rifles :D

Aawww, there's lotsa dumb-ass Westerners too ....
seems to be a great density in an around Vancouver and
on the lower half of the Island. ( Yeah, in and around Canmore too ! )
