Johnn, you sent me a note describing the good group you got with a 405 grain bb bullet and Unique, I think you said 13.5 grains. I told you I didn't have any Unique left, then looked again at my p owder and there was 1½ pounds. Must have had it for a while, because I paid 8.99 for a pound, marked on it!
I didn't have any 405 grain bb, so used 420 flat base. Took a little scoop to measure Unique powder and found a 1.6cc full weighed 16.4 grains. So I loaded up five and shot them at 100 metres. Here is the results.

1.4 ins., but without that flyer to the left, .92"
Group is 3" lower than my "standard" load, 45 of 4895, and about an inch left.
Unique just must be a good powder for light loads.
I have an eye examination next week, probably will get new glasses, so just wait 'till after that!

I also tried H110 powder. Loaded five each at 24 grains, 27 grains and 29 grains. About the worst of any loads I have tried in the Marlin! The 29 grains was surprisingly heavy, seemingly more recoil than 45 of 4895.
 
Looks good Bruce. I haven't had the chance for any more cast bullet and light load testing since I sent you the 13.5gr Unique load and results. Soon though. Good shooting.:D

To get some guy or gal to look at your eyes, tell you you are an old fart, and pick your pocket. Then give you a prescription for glasses at the place of your choice, where you will have your pocket picked again.

I think all three of us know that feeling.

Times coming to get mine checked too.

What type of primer are you using with that Unique load and do you know the vel.?...Does your standard H4895 load shoot that well?..I don't think you could do much better than that Unique load...nor would you need to..good shooting..:)

On the light loads of Unique I used large pistol primers. They are Winchester and marked, "For standard or magnum loads." I have also used CCI, 350, large pistol, but the metal on them seems softer, as they flatten a bit more than they should. I can see no difference in the flattening of the Winchester, as compared to rifle primers.
For all the light loads I use a means of keeping the powder tight to the base. Johnn Peterson got me going on a material called stop draft, to put around door frames. It is a soft, springy material that easily cuts with a knife. I was able to get it in the bulk from a building supply dealer, in ½ inch size. I cut off about 5/8 of an inch and stuff it onto the powder. I have tried it without anything, but for me, the stuffed ones are more accurate.
On my loads of 45 grains of IMR4895, I use large rifle primers.
I hestitate to post another of my targest here, because I am certainly not bragging, but you asked about the load, so here goes.

There are ten shots in two groups and all are 420 grain cast. The first five were gas check, which I shot at 100 metres, then marked a pen mark around them. I then fired the next five, which were flat base. The last five made a group actually a hair smaller than the target I posted with the Unique. Notice one of the last ones doubled on the bottom circle.
I'm sure this doesn't prove that flat base are more accurate, just that I shot better the second time. I don't know about velocity yet, but my chronograph is supposed to come in September. It has a moderate recoil, just a nice weight load for general "plinking."

H4831..thanks for the info on the primers that you use for your Unique load...I just checked my Lyman Cast Bullet handbook and the load of 16.5 grs = 1275fps out of a 28" test barrel....
Your H4895 load is perfect!...Great accuracy at around 1400fps to 1500fps....Just what I'am looking for..... Do you use filler in your H4895 load also?
