more aggressive cleaning media

so is crushed walnut more aggressive at cleaning cases than corn cob? I have some cases that have a bit of corrosion on them (turned green etc) and would like to get it polished off. but no matter how long they sit in the corn cob media, they still have spots of corrosion on them. They are only 9mm, and I don't think it's enough to weaken the case. Any ideas?

I bought some of Lyman's "Tufnut" media recently, which is treated with a polishing agent. It surprised me at how fast it cleaned some older .270 brass that I couldn't get clean with corncob media. It's the first time I've tried this stuff.... it works great but the polishing agent leaves a bit of "red dust" on your hands if you dig through it. I'm not sure how healthy it is for you, but it really does a job on cleaning brass.

I use corncob bedding and cut it 3:1 with the Lyman's Tufnut stuff. I find it cuts down the amount of jewelers rouge left on the cases after a tumble but still gets them nice and clean.

My buddy recently had some slightly corroded cases that would not come clean no matter what. Using walnut shells witch i find more aggressive than corn cob. as well as nearly a whole can of brasso. I use walut shell with brasso and i get super shiny cases every time. If you only got a few 0000 steel wool wll clean them up quick.

You can get the same effect as walnut/brasso without the brasso if you leave it in the tumbler long enough. I do my tumbling out is a detatched building. Sometime, when I forget, it runs for a couple days.

Yessir...reeeeeeal shiny.....

Walnut is more abrasive, and does a damn good job of getting rid of the light brown tarnish that you can find from outdoor range brass. With a little Dillon polish added, it's quicker and shinier. Only problem is it's dusty as hell. I let mine go for 4+ hours or longer in walnut, then another 30 minutes in corn cob to clean off the dust.

I find that any case that's actually turned green usually won't clean up to my tastes, so it gets tossed.

bah green ain't that bad, it's only 9mm it still works!!!

thanks for the replies guys, I'll try some Brasso. I have the case cleaner solution, and it works great most times, but these cases need a little extra. I'll also pick up some walnut shells at Petsmart (if they have it).

Some people paic when you say that you use Brasso to clean cases.

It is supposed to weaken the brass.

I've used it with no ill effects, though I now just leave it in the tubler longer.

I read on this board a while ago about someone using NuFinish car polish in thier media with excellent results.

I'll see if I cant find it.

That was me, gth, and I have used it on four batches of brass now, 125-150 cases of 30-06 size each time. Some of it was pretty grungy.

IIRC, I put about 1/10 of the bottle in four pounds of Lizard Litter crushed walnut hulls. I know I still have most of the bottle left.

Just amazing!

Scotchbrite them a little to remove corrosion. Throw them away if corrosion is so bad much material would have to be removed to clean them up. (White Scotchbrite is softest but green will probably work best)

Have you tried the Dillon Rapid Polish? First time I tried it it made a huge difference. Cases that had been cleaned only in crushed walnut (for more than 12 hours) came out much cleaner after adding some Dillon polish. It cuts the cleaning time by a lot.

How clean do the inside of your cases come out?

It occured to me that a good part of the friction in cleaning cass comes from the cases themselves bouncing into each other. That is why the outside is so much cleaner than the inside. So now I throw all my used SMALL primers into the media, so they will get inside the cases. However, do not do this with any 22 cal brass (222, 223, etc.) as the primers will get wedged in tight in the mouth with the media bits.

I've used a small amount (cap full) of liquid car polish for years, it does a wonderfull job, and really extends the life of old media.
I periodically clean the green goo out of the tumbler too espescially before adding new media.

I had a pail full (20L) of outdoor 40 brass that had been rained on and had corrosion. I soaked them in a citric acid solution first. The citric acid turns the dark corrosion to dull red. The cases were then spread out and dried then put through the tumbler with walnut with some of the Lyman additive. Comes out good and then a short time in corn cob to really get the brass shiny.

I tried the Nu finish but couldn't get it to work very well. Any suggestions?
