Just a "heads up" for my fellow antique owners. I'm in the process of getting the antique status letter for a Smith & Wesson .44 Russian. Outside of the fact that it's taking forever, I had an email from the Canadian Firearms Program asking where I bought it, who I bought it from, and how I came into possession of it. REALLY? Personally, I fail to see how any of this is germane. As we all probably know, if a pistol is made before 1898 and is in a caliber on the deemed "antique", then it's an antique firearm. To me, that's all the criteria which must be met. I am going to be writing to my MP (as if it'll do any good), but I just thought I'd let my fellow gunnies know what's going on.

LawrenceN, you may want to speak to someone else at the CFO, than the person you talked with or traded emails with. Some of the folks there can't get their heads around non registration.
Also, I believe some insurers won't insure antique status pistols without the verification letter.
All sorts of reasons why some people want the letter.
Yes, it's just another form of registration.
