Well, nowadays it seems the options for AR's is nearly endless. All kinds of AR makers are popping up these days. But why not for the M14? How come we are essentially limited to either cheap Norks or expensive Springfields? I'm wondering why companies like Ruger or Auto Ordnance or others can't get into making quality M14's for somewhere between what Norinco and Springfields are going for.

Any ideas?

There are other options. LRB, SEI, fulton armoury and I think 7.62mm Firearms all make M14 receivers. The reality is that M14 receivers are expensive to make. Not only are AR15s made out of aluminum which is easier to machine, the market is also a hell of a lot bigger. This means that more research, technology, and resources are put into manufacturing Ar15 parts. The sad reality is that M14 are expensive guns. Be glad we have the cheap norc option. It has made these rifles accesable with less money.

Edit... Gobc beat me to it :)

The biggest reason is probably that m14 receivers are very hard to machine correctly = expensive.

GI parts supplies are also drying up leading to an increase in cost for the rifle as a whole if using GI parts, or needing to manufacture parts, which is also expensive to set up for.

Bottom line is aside from our luck getting cheap chinese rifles, I think the 2k mark is about as cheap as a company can produce and m14 type rifle in north america.

The M-14 is a legend, many rifles better and more accurate, will never achieve this status... JP.

I guess I'll have to suck it up and get a Springfield at some point. 2 grand is a hell of a price for one though, in my opinion. I am not a big fan of Nork stuff. I have a Nork M14 and it hasn't functioned properly since the day I've had it.

Another option to spending that 2k is take some time gathering up the american made m14 parts and nice krieger match barrel, then strip your norc down to the receiver only and have a reputable smith build and tune the rifle.

If you just want to buy a really nice M14 type rifle go here and have it brought in.

It's just unfortunate that quality M14's cant be had for around the 1000-1200 dollar mark. LRB's are nice, but are another 800 bucks +exchange rate, duty and shipping over a Springfield standard.

A couple of thoughts...

"hasn't functioned properly"...can mean just about anything. Quite frankly, I don't see any reason why we couldn't help you fix yours and get it up and running properly. And do so for a tiny fraction the cost of a Springfield too. Could be $100 in parts...might be a $5 spring...or maybe just some elbow grease, but I'm certain yours is fixable without breaking your bank account.

BUT...for us to help diagnose the problem with your rifle, we need to know more about what it's actually doing. The more specific you can be, the better. And while you fix it yourself with our advice, you'll learn about it more and come to appreciate it.

Regarding the original title of this thread though, in all honesty, I think there ware plenty of options for adding to any M14, from original stocks, to target stocks, to nice wood stocks, aluminum military stocks for bolting all sorts of lasers and night vision... there are match iron sights, match spring guides, old style slings, marksmanship slings, bipods, probably 100 different options for mounting scopes...there are many options for springs and small parts, be it new mfg or USGI.

Yeah I guess by options I meant options for buying new complete rifles, not accessories or parts.

I made a thread here a while ago about my M14 problems and I got some good advice from members here, but it doesn't seem that anything is wrong with it, yet the action doesn't budge at all when fired. It's currently sitting at a gunsmith shop. I'm sure it will work once its back, but I am usually a fan of higher quality firearms, especially with something as iconic as an M14. If the option existed, I'd sell it in a heartbeat and buy a quality M14 for 1000-1200, but that doesn't seem possible.

Being in the midst of building a few Garands with the recent release of cheap receivers, I can only wish Garand parts, USGI and new manufacture, were as readily available as M-14 ones are! Sure, they're not cheap, but I'm not worried if I'm ever going to find a replacement op rod, bolt, barrel, trigger group, etc. for my M-14.

There's allot if guys out there getting a Norinco receivers and stripping the out and putting US parts in. The Norinco receivers are forged, stronger than the expensive US ones.

This is what I heard, and read.

I know somebody who has nearly $4,000 in a rifle built around a Norinco receiver.
The problem is that he can't bring it to the USA.

I'm perfectly happy with my SA National Match.

yep, pricey !

the m1a costs alot but they are a well made rifle, designed for the round they shoot ! The rifle has extensive history and lots of literature on how to maintain a running m1a. i'm not into 223 garbage, so can't comment on the ar part availability ( but you can use your imagination as to why they need it )

M1 garand is also a great gun but pricey, still worth every penny !

in the end, its up to you whether you spend the money well, or buy a piece of aluminum.

You get what you pay for the springfield is worth every penny . Stuff can't be made for cheep anymore unless you have it made in China then quality suffers

No demand. The M-14 hasn't been used in U.S. NRA style shooting competitions. It's an MG as far as the ATF is concerned. M1A's still aren't used in those matches. Hence, there isn't as much aftermarket stuff.

Not so fast...

From another forum:

I just ordered a CASM Gen II mount. Will let you know how it works out.
Well, the best laid plans ... The @$&*# rear sight pocket on my new M1A super match was not machined correctly so the CASM mount base would not seat properly. I performed some surgery on the mount base and then I found out that the stripper clip guide was too high so that the mount would not rotate like it is supposed to. Be the last thing that I will buy from SAI.
