More N.W.T. hunters charged with wasting caribou meat

CBC News
Two more hunters in the Northwest Territories have been charged with wasting caribou meat in the Tlicho region, about 200 kilometres north of Yellowknife.

Last month, five other hunters were charged after dozens of dead caribou were discovered near the community of Wekweti and the old Colomac mine site.

Only the heads or back straps had been taken from many of the animals, with the rest of the meat left to waste, wildlife officials said.

Wasting and abandoning the meat of hunted wildlife, allowing it to spoil, is an offence in the territory.

The hunters face fines of $500. If they do not pay the fine, or want to challenge the charge, their case will go to court.

Since they don't out and say that they are white, I am figuring that they were some of the locals.

Good!

I got no problem with sustenance hunting. Sorta like a buffet. Take what you want, or need, provided you don't waste it.

Cheers

It's a shame that some hunters(regardless of race) make us all look bad with this type of hunting behavior ... it's saddening and uncalled for ... :(

Having lived in both places for a good number of years, I can tell you the problem is as bad in northern Alberta as it is farther north. I can't begin to count the number of moose and elk I've found with noses, tongues and tenderloins gone. Last fall I came across on native hunting camp with about 5 or 6 moose hanging up in +25 weather; I could smell it a half mile before I found it. Every bit of the meat was spoiled. Three days later the camp was gone, and the meat was in a big pile on the ground. To be fair, I've also found several with just the horns gone, and that wasn't natives. It's pretty sickening sometimes.

In the late '80s in the southern N.W.T. (near Trout Lake, south of Ft. Simpson), a couple of local hunters stopped at our camp, tickled to death about the herd of Woodland Caribou they had just wiped out - they came across 12, and killed them all. They couldn't say enough good things about their Mini-14s with their 20 round mags, and I'll never forget one guy saying "If I'd have had one of these things years ago, I'd be rich today!".

I know of some families that go out deer hunting in the winter and take down 8 to 10. They let them sit in their yard, frozen, and cut off what they want when they want it. Most of it gets eaten by dogs, wolves, and coyotes. It's completely disgusting.

When you are talking about the low fine, it is likely natives. Therefore,
1) They will never pay it, anyway, or
2) The government will give them the money to pay it.

Our Canadian natives, at least in BC, have been wasting meat since first observed by our earliest explorers. They kill all they can kill today and never worry about tomorrow, or next year.

You forgot:

3) They'll take it to court and the judge will throw it out.

Been up to the Saskatchewan/Territories border many times in the winter. The waste is incredible. Disgusting chasing animals with snow machines and shooting then down a dozen at a time. Just hope the animal rights people never get any video as all the nuckle heads in Europe will then think All Canadians hunt in such a manner.

I've been hunting bears in Ontario for most several decades and enjoy eating the meat. Ontario law says we must not let the meat spoil or go to waste. However, since some pinheads at Queens Park cancelled the spring hunt here I have begun hunting Quebec. Last year when there, I smelled what I thought was another hunter's bait site. When I investigated I found the skinned out carcasses of around 5 or 6 good size bears - dumped off a bush road edge. I was quite shocked by the sight. I inquired and found out that Quebec law says you can not let game meat spoil and waste but adds - "except black bear". I can't get used to that. Seems awfully wasteful and probably very prevalent in Quebec I'm guessing.

I was taught at an early age,if you shot it you ate it.No wasteing or killing for the fun of shooting or killing.DAN>>>

It's amazing some people have guns, anyone recall that story about a year ago, a couple guys charged for shooting at a moose with a .22, for fun.....

These people in these stories are pathetic.

re-wasting game meat

First; I'm only residing here in BC since the last 2 1/2 yrs and being a fanatic hunter (meathunter) myself; I'm shocked & disgusted to hear that this carry-on is going on here aswell! We've been brought up carrying out all the available meat you can safely carry out (even if it needs multiple trips) and use all the available meat ourselves! Meat first and any trophy takes 2nd place in my book! I teach the very same ethics to my kids and hopefully they will pass it on to their kids one day?
Being a 'Kiwi' from European descent; I have come across situations like this in the homeland a lot (referring to NZ) and it always made me and fellow hunters angry to see such meat-wasting excercisies taking place under the banner of 'conservation' and supported by our very own goverment! Our very own D.O.C. (Dep. Of Conservation) is one of the worst offenders, when it concerns 'so-called' animal-control of 'introduced species' such as deer (7 species), goats, pigs, wild sheep and last but not least the Australian opossum; mostly by means of 10-80 poison!
It is my opinion that those caught in the act of offending, should not get-off with any fines whatsoever; instead they should be served with a 'lifetime' ban on hunting by the court and all the means used for the act should be confiscated: 'period'!
2ndly: the one man is right indeed in saying it can give a real 'stirrup' if PITA or the Europeans get air/proof of it! As I see it; part of the problem is this highly over-advertised and blown out of proportion 'Trophy-Hunting' culture that seems to be the 'hot' issue in most hunting-groups for the last 30 yrs orso, combined with a lack of proper hunting-education! Some of these hunters who do these courses haven't been taught the true & basic 'etics' of hunting and respect for the animals they're hunting for! These are the very basic-rules of most, if not all (Western) European based hunting-courses; as I've done em ones myself! Sadly; having also done the hunters-education course out here, I see far too little emphasis is being put on these 'ethics' and as a result; a small nr. of 'hunters' who didn't get taught by the 'old man', nor from the hunters-course; so in-turn are venturing out lacking most, if not all of these etics and seem to be out there for the trophies only and nothing else! If we don't step-up on the plate; sooner or later they'll be ruining it for all of us, including future generations!
Thats my 2 cents worth!

Funny when I lived up in Yellowknife it was always some greasy white boys who always took a quarter at the most and dropped several cariboo in the process.

I recently went up north to the area (born and raised in Yellowknife) and all you see are newfies with guns. I only went out once and didnt see anything. No cariboo anywhere near YK these days. This has the locals concerned right now.

$500 is a joke.

How did this turn into a native bashing thread? Don't know if I was in 'season' when I went up and sure didnt have any papers - I dont need them.
