I am considering trying my hand at IPSC. I just finished reading a ton on the board, which is really helpfull, but I have a few of my own questions.

I have a CZ 75B Omega with Tritium Sights right now that I shoot with, but apparently I should have bought the shadow from what I read on here. Will my CZ be ok ? I have replaced the main spring and put thin grips on it but I believe those mods are ok for production class ?

I am new so I really only shoot at a distance of 10-15yards. Do I need to put some time in shooting longer ?

Are there any recommendations for gear like belts and holsters ?

How many mags should I get, 5 ?

Thanks

Shoot what you have, and have fun doing it.

Five mags is probably a good start. More is better, but five will do.

For a holster, the Bladetech DOH is a good bet. The two part belts are best.

You can install fiber optic front and either competition or tactical rear sights and that will be IPSC legal. For front, you have a choice of either 1.0mm or 1.5mm thick FO sight.
6 mags is more or less ideal, with 5 mag pouches on belt. You use one to load or top up as you always start with gun loaded to capacity, which is 11 rounds, one chambered and 10 in mag.
Practice with what you have, slow fire and accuracy, recoil management, trigger control, recovering sight picture after recoil, trigger reset during recoil, stance and grip, draw and holstering, dryfire.

Your CZ is a very good gun for IPSC and IDPA.

PM me if you have futher questions and/or need parts and so on :)

Your CZ is fine. Don't worry about what division you're shooting in, just get started.

As for the 10-15 yards, it all depends. If you have a shotgun pattern and a 2 foot group, then perhaps you might work on your accuracy a bit, but don't let that stop you from taking your Black Badge Course. The course is about teaching SAFETY at an IPSC match, familiarizing you with some of the skills you will develop further down the road. It's not meant to be a test of whether you should be in the sport or not. There's lots of time to develop your speed and/or accuracy as you practice being safe.

As for belts/holsters...I find that almost all of the gear is the same. People will espouse the benefits and advantages of brand [fill in the blanks], but it really comes down to what you're familiar with. I use gear that everybody else probably would consider obsolete and have no problem with it. Your belt/holster choice will not be what holds you back. Whatever holster/mag pouch combo you pick, that'll be fine for you in a year. At this point, though, I'd go for a cheap holster and a single cheap mag pouch for your black badge course. A good, stiff belt will probably be fine, too.

I'd get at least 6 magazines.

IPSC will challenge all your shooting skills, including distance, weak hand, strong hand, moving.

Just like investing money, people say to "diversify". I'd suggest you do the same with your IPSC practise. Vary your distance. Try shooting the same practise stage from different start positions. Spend time on one handed shooting, and safely transitioning from holster to weak hand.

There are so many different skills needed.

Be safe & have fun. DVC

You can also check out IDPA in Chilliwack. It's pace is slower but it's still based on same handgunning techniques.

You know I am not sure of I can remove the sights that are on the gun ? I will have to look.

the Bladetech DOH

Ok any other suggestions ?

BladeTech DOH with TekLoc if you plan on shooting IDPA in addition to IPSC.

CZ front sight is held by roll pin, 2mm roll pin punch or similar is best to drive pin out. Then sight can be pushed/tapped out in muzzle direction. Sight has groove at the bottom that you'll need to make on new sight. Rear sight is just held by tight fit and a little dimple infront of the sight. Competition and Tactical sights have to be pushed in and come with hex screw to secure it in place.

Try CRAFM, they carry CZ handguns and BladeTech products. They list it @ $80 under products>comp. gear.

If you order sights from them, get roll pin punch too. For ease of replacing rear sight - either take it to local gunsmith of you can get P500 Universal Sight Tool from Brownells, it was $130 not long ago.

Are the Tritium Sights worth anything ? I am thinking now I shouldn't have bought one with those sights, but I don't think I had a choice. I bought it from PD in Edmonton and whne I got it it had those sights which don't seem to be popular, really. Any reason why ?

Just go out and shoot dude. Don't get all carried away with trick part a and b to z. I shot a bone stock CZ with night sights until I started to win matchs. Then with my experience in IPSC with playing with other shooters guns I made choices for sights and etc. Use your extra cash for ammo right now. Listen to HB in his post - the guy knows his stuff in this game.

Good advice. Shooting is the fun part :D

the advice of Hungrybeagle is right on target!
He has a good idea of what he is talking about, considering he is the 2010 Canadian National Champ in Open Class & a great guy!

Absolutely. Go play, then decide if you really need to swap parts or upgrade equipment. Odds are at some point you will, but wait until you know why.
