What would be a good option for a NV rifle scope, for the singular purpose of shooting at coyote type livestock predators, no further than 100 meters away?

Since this scope would be limited in use, affordable options are a good idea, although I usually like pretty good gear...

Would Gen I be suitable? Or should I just forget it, bite the bullet and buy a Gen II scope?

The parameters you suggest(weapons mount, shooting coyotes at night and affordable?) I suggest do not exist in a true night vision scope. Real night vision stuff is essentially unavailable in Canada that will mount on a rifle save some old generation one Russian. Try the biggest objective lens you can find with the smallest magnification setting you can live with to get the largest exit pupil and you would be suprised how well it would work as long as you have some moonlight to work with. Biggest problem will be trying to pick up your reticle on the animal and this is where an illuminated reticle would come in handy...once again price becomes the issue. Phil.

Having owned several, Gen1 and Gen2, I gotta say that Gen1 is ass, little more than a novelty toy. Gen2 is decent, and some are almost on par with the Gen3 stuff I've looked through.
I had a kickass Gen2 scope, it would've totally fit your requirements, sold it to someone on here years ago.

The gen1 ones are probably a little lame, can't say for sure -but any gen1 I've ever seen wasn't worth much. The gen2 ones are probably all quite decent, but will they sell you one(?). The ATN Gen2 mk6900 Crusader, thats the one I had, I think. I think it was Armedsask I sold it to (years and years ago), he probably got to play with it a lot more than I did. It was very clear, and didnt really need the IR light. The cheaper ones are blurry, noisy, and dimmer (the light accumulation is weak).
