GunNutz,

I am looking for a first hunting rifle. I will most likely be hunting mule deer, black bear and maybe moose. I was thinking of something in .270, 30-06, or 300 win mag. Something that could do all.

I am either going to spend a bit extra and get a Tikka T3 or Savage 114 American classic with a Leupold scope or cheap out a bit and get a Savage 111 (again) or Marlin XL7 and put decent optics on it.

What do you guys think?

30-06 or maybe 300 for one rifle. IMO if you buy a 270 you'll be looking for something bigger to compliment it, which isn't a bad thing, but for one rifle only, the answer is 30-06.
Just so you know, we have all 3, and the '06 gets used more than the other 2 put together. If we did more elk hunting the 300 would get the nod, otherwise, it's the '06.

The 270 or 30.06. of the ones you mention would get my vote. Another consideration would be a 7mm Rem Mag as if you are after mule deer your shots could be long and the flatter trajectory of the 7 might make those first few opportunities result in a downed animal as you learn to judge distance etc.

A good rule is to never recommend a .300 to anyone that has to ask. Its a great caliber that has to be worked up to, and those that should be shooting it will find their own way there.

Either the .270 or 30-06 will suit you fine. I'd take the Tikka over the Savage anyday, although I'm not particulary enamoured by either.

My opinion is a TC Icon Precision Hunter 308, incredible accuracy, super trigger and you are set up to shoot easy up to 500 metres ( and without loosing your dentition ) any animals in NA except the big bears... Cheers. JP.

For an good all round cartridge, the 30-06 is hard to beat. 110/125 grains for varmints - albeit about 1.5 MOA.

150 gr for Mulely's and the like.

I have had tremendous success with a 165 gr for moose.

180 grain for black bear.

My first rifle was a 30-06 and it still is a great all-round cartridge and my go-to when I hunt big game. My dad had a 300 win mag and I really did not see the advantages of it over my 30-06, considering my comfort hunting range.

I think I have heard this song before...

There's a good JC Higgins in .270 on the EE, if you're going to "cheap out" this would be a far better option than either of the above. It may not be consmetically pretty but it's a solid gun that IMO is undervalued. Refinish the stock, bed it, get it blued if you like and make it a project while you learn the in's and out's of guns. You simply can't go wrong with it.
