From what I read it is common to have a barrel and receiver not matching. Arsenal rebarreling is quite common. But is it common to have a receiver that is newer then the barrel? I have one with a 1942 barrel stamp and a 1949 receiver stamp? It is a sniper repro so I guess that could have something to do with it.
What do you think?

I think you've answered your own question. The repro is a parts gun.

I also don't think it would be that uncommon to find an older barrel than receiver on any milsurp. The components were made up in batches and were used when and where needed.

Many 91-30 rifles don't have any marks on the receivers at all. Some of the hex receivers will have crests and a few may be dated but for the most part all of the markings are on the barrel shank.

I thought all the recievers were dated under the rear tang

You have it upside down, it was the receiver that was replaced. In Europe the barrel is considered the gun, unlike here where the receiver is the major part. Rifle comes in to the Factory with a defective receiver, barrel with the serial number is salvaged and matted to a new receiver in 1949.

Ya that makes a lot of sense. Since it is a sniper reproduction do you think its receiver was replaced with one that was already drilled for mount? It was mentioned that batches of components were made up. Maybe batches of receivers destined for snipers were made up. Really this could have been pieced together in the not to distant past.

The cool thing about these rifles which is quite addictive to me is that each one has a slightly different story.

- No, your rifle was originally just part of a standard rebuilding program.

- Sniper Repros were built using regular rifles stored away at the Arsenal and purchased by the exporter and fitted with repro scopes and mounts, no special care was taken in building these repros by the exporters. These rifles or parts were never snipers to begin with and are modern put-togethers.
