Hello all,

I am currently awaiting my PAL and RPAL (both undergoing processing), and was just wondering what a Mosin 91/30 PU sniper goes for. I'm not necessarily looking for an original scope or some extreamly rare unissued pristine piece. I am just wondering how much a basic one (complete, with scope, mount etc...) goes for? and where you can pick one up.

Thanks a lot!

Check the EE, they come up every once and a while. In fact I believe there's one for sale now for about $900.

thanks, I'll have to take a look!

Any retailers (around the toronto area), or anything in Canada that does ship?

Are you talking a rearsenalled mosin sniper that has been refitted with a repro scope, or just a 91/30 wearing a repro scope? The rearsenalled then refitted snipers tend to go for more.

the rearsenalled sniper varient. I would like one that was once/still a sniper. I have seen some advertised as "ex-snipers", but am thinking it would be too much work to convert back to a sniper (even with repro mount and optics). Anyone more informed in the area know what the better route to take would be?

Yes its true. I have a Tula ex-sniper reconverted back with the correct mount but repro optics. The Gunsmith was not happy at all because it was very hard to drill out the screws that were blocking the original holes and those holes came in 3 different sizes so I had to find the correct screws to install. He also broke few bits drilling them out.

It would be much easier, cheaper, less time and material consuming to make a sniper from scratch.

In order or increasing difficulty and cost.

1) Basic mosin with repro parts. Simple, relatively easy, the cheapest you can go, take the time to get a good shooter.

2) Re-arsenalled sniper. More difficult on account of the welded holes. Takes more effort to redo, sometimes cost more as is. Keep in mind most snipers were re-arsenalled when they were withdrawn as snipers, but some were re-arsenalled when their bore wasn't acceptable.

3) Re-arsenalled sniper with original scope - original anything = expensive.

4) original sniper completely original. Sell your first born, recieve what could be a fake.

would a standard 91/30 be on par with an ex sniper converted back ? is there much of a difference in accuracy over an ex sniper and standard issue rifle?

I bought a sniper build from a CGNer and with reloads I do get in between moa and submoa
I guess I lucked out with a good rifle and a working recipe

There are large variations in quality on a lot of mosins. Date of manufacture could be a place to start, but it depends on original quality, re-arsenalling quality, storage conditions, and useage.

I would say an ex sniper *should* be more accurate, as it was at one point picked out over others for its accuracy. In the re-arsenalling process it could very well have had a random trigger group, bolt, and stock put on it, which could completely negate that. It could also have been re-arsenalled because the gun stopped performing as well, but I don't know how common that was.

A good shooting 91/30 could definitely shoot as well as an ex sniper. It really depends on which gun you find. I got lucky, and mine performs really well. You may have to dig a bit, buy, part swap, and sell a bunch to build the perfect one.

Also, if you're making a pu repro sniper, it is possible to do small things to tweek the guns performance, such as making sure the stock isn't pressing in any one area on the barrel, improving trigger performance, etc.

Long story short, it's possible to find a standard 91/30 that performs to or outperforms the level set by an ex sniper. Ex snipers could perform badly. Both can benefit from minor knowledgeable work done, that won't affect the originality of the piece (too heavily...)

H Wally, I like you once thought that the Russians picked their WWll sniper rifles for superior accracy. I was wrong. It turns out that they were makeing so many of them, that they couldn't be bothered. They felt that all things being equal and the majority of their rifles being acceptably accurate with issue ammo, that they would build the sniper rifles first and turf the real dogs after, dureing initial sighting. They had orders for thousands at a time.
When I first read this on a CGN thread a few years back, it came to me that the ex sniper rifles on the market may just be rejects that couldn't pass muster.

Thanks for all the input guys, I think the most logical solution for me would be a built from a standard 91/30 in really good shape. I know plenty of sources to pick one up, however where can one fine PU mounts/hardware and scope? I would like original mounts but with my budget deffinatly a repro scope.

You have to decide if you want a real sniper or just a 91/30 with a fake scope and mount on it. Personally I had to have the real thing. Any idiot can find a 91/30 in mint shape, buy a scope and mount of ebay, and look I have a PU sniper! Gimme a break. What really makes me laugh is when people sell so-called PU snipers on the EE. One I looked at recently had a fake turn down bolt that was so obvious you'd have to be a fool to buy it.
