Hey guys,
I want to get an Archangel stock for my Mosin Nagant. I've watched videos on youtube and one thing I've noticed is how much the barrel whips whenever a shot is fired. I'm not opposed to shortening the barrel but I don't want to lose accuracy in the process. How much can I shorten the barrel without losing accuracy? If I trim off 4" off the barrel should that be enough to prevent the barrel from whipping? Thanks for your help.

Don't shorten the barrel just to suit the stock. Buy a Mosin carbine and use that for the AA stock. Looks much better that way IMHO.

I was planning on getting a muzzle brake installed anyway, so if I shorten the barrel might as well get both operations done at once. I'm not really interested in buying another Mosin at the moment so buying a carbine isn't really on my mind right now. But I do agree the AA stock would look good on it.

Shorter equals stiffer but there is no way to compensate for a skinny barrel without replacing it with heavier profile. Just so you are prepared, don't expect it to shoot much better after shortening it.

The AA stock does have a barrel tensioner, but I don't think it's enough. The videos I saw on YouTube the barrel looks like it bounces during each shot. It sounds like you can "tune" the barrel to reduce whipping and increase accuracy though.

True you can adjust the tension if the stock on the barrel with the AA stock. Mosins tend to like a tight tensioned barrel too.

I wouldn't worry about barrel whip/accuracy on a 91/30 as my hexes from 1916 - early 30's will all shoot 1 1/4 to 2" groups as is with irons at 100 yards and all with hardball..........Harold

Many guns will whip, even if you can't see it as obviously. Go out and shoot it before you do anything and see what kind of accuracy you are getting. As long as it whips in the same way each time you should be fine.

I emailed Archangel Industries and ran my question by them, here's their response:

"The barrels are free floated, all free floated barrels will "whip" or move that way, they are supposed to do that for better accuracy. I wouldn't worry about it, my T53 in our stock w/ surplus ammo at 150 yrds holds a 2.0" group, you will be fine."
