So today has been an interesting day for cleaning my Winter bought Mosin Nagant rifle. I have been waiting for a nice spring/summer day so i could clean this rifle up and get it ready for some range time. Well since this was a new project I thought a new toy was also a good idea. I picked up a lyman turbo sonic 2600. Don't we all need an ultrasonic cleaner?
So I disassembled the rifle and tossed the stock in some garbage bags and put it on the deck in the sun. (The weather decided to turn overcast and cold a hour later...) Then i disassembled the bolt and tossed it and the trigger guard/mag into the ultrasonic cleaner with some simple green and hot water. After a couple cycles the bolt is nice and clean but the black paint on the mag i noticed was starting to peel right off. I'm not unhappy with this because it was rather thick and gloppy but it does make me have to do more work to scrub off the remaining paint that doesn't want to leave.
Now should i repaint it black or try my hands at bluing the metal? Never tried bluing before.
