i have no camera at the moment, cant take pictures.

the bolt on my mosin closes.. appears to lock, but sits about 2mm off the reciever, and feels spongy, i can push it down so it makes contact with the reciever, but appears to almost be sagging into the magazine.. when i push the handle down so it is in contact with the reciever the rest of the bolt lifts slightly.

does this sound safe to fire? ( its a refurb that i got for like $100 and i havent shot it yet - has not been fired since its refurbishment )
 
Pretty loose

I've got a re-furb M/N 91 and the bolts NOT a tight fit, LOL. As you pull the trigger you can see the cocking Knob on the rear the the bolt drop a mil or two. I've run 1/2 crate of czech surplus through it(400 rds); works good.
Go to surplusrifle.com they'll help with this rifle. You can build a hefty gun cradle from a "how to" article there for about 6$. Tie it in place, take it out in the country( a range would not be the place,lol) put a few rounds through it by pulling the trigger remotely( 15' string?).
 
The only thing important with a Mosin is the fit of the floating bolthead. If it headspaces right, all is good. They were designed that way and you can interchange bolt bodies without fear.
Make sure the sear action is good and not too light then you can go with confidence.

Check that the bolt head itself locks all the way and there shouldn't be any problem. While you're at it, run a toothpick in the lug recesses in the receiver to make sure there isn't anything funny in there. My own MN had a bit of a "sticky" bolt, turns out that there was some sort of beeswax-like substance in there that was causing things to stick a bit.
