I started with a $140 Westrifle 1943 classic. It shot 5" groups
@100M. I hacksawed the barrel off at 20", cut the front sight
off and lapped to the new contour with emery cloth, attached
it with JB Weld, crowned it with a steel countersink bit in a cordless drill, cut the
forearm back almost to the finger groove, loaded 174gr RN
over 45gr of Varget in Lapua brass. The sights are stock, but
highlighted with silver paint. Today I shot 3 groups of
3 shots @100M that measured 1.85", 1.93", and 2.28".
The 1.85" was the first 3 shots. The chrono said an average
of 2356fps, but my bro found this one reads about 60fps slow.
I now have a minute of moose rifle for half the cost of an
Axis with much more character. As far as those shocked
by my "desecration" of history, feel free to donate me another
Mosin to stay stock in my safe.

See pics in post 23.

You could have bought one just like that with a front sight that wont fall off when the barrel gets warm for $60. Globe made thousands of them years ago. Funny that you would use Lapua brass, a bag costs as much as the rifle.

$60 eh? Are you offering to sell me one? I promise to leave it as is. I wasn't looking years ago. I'll tack weld the front sight now that its in the right place. The brass was $0.90/rnd. An order that wasn't picked up and I got a deal on. My dead Aerostar van is a collectors item to the right person. Should I leave that untouched too? I appreciate the importance of a genuine collector's item; a '43 Mosin that makes a Norinco look high end isn't one.

Actually I do, a nice lightweight sporter chambered in .308 win. Oddly enough, it still feeds from the mag. I would have traded that in an ati stock for your "beater" & given you $100 for the brass. Might have paid shipping both ways too.

Don't let anyone bring you down for bubba-ing the mosin. I would've left it stock, but that's just me. This is a free country and you're free to do what you want. No matter what anyone else says. TBH some people on these boards just feel a natural sense of superiority due to trader rating or join date. It can't be helped.

That's interesting. I bought a sporterized Mosin in .308 from a gun shop in 1975 for $60. I still have it with a Weaver Qwik Point attached. I assumed it was custom made and didn't know until now that globco sold those. It seems to function well.

I have a request for photo's so here's some quick one's. Sorry for the poor quality.
