Perhaps a dumb question. Anyone here use a Mosin to hunt deer with? If so obviously you do not use the surplus ammo correct?

Side note: Where can I get the best deal on a Mosin combo online.

Cheers and thank you

Lots use mosin to hunt, 91/30 is a bit long for hunting heavy brush areas but it's doable. M38/M44 offer better length for that kind of hunting. No to surplus, need a soft point projectile in place of FMJ. Many of the site sponsors carry mosin combo's, just click and search their websites.

Nice Whitetail.
A friend of mine just picked up a Mosin and wants to go deer hunting this fall. I told him I would take him out as long as he comes out shooting this summer so I know he can shoot. Also need to find some soft point rounds for him.
Maybe I need a Mosin as well..........?

M38 and 44 make good truck guns as a carbine but I prefer to carry the 91/30 in the bush. It carries quite well and has no problem for a 150+ yard shot in the bush with iron sights.

When you fire the M38/M44 without earpro it also feels like you're getting punched in the head, and they're double the price because they weren't produced en masse to the same level as the 91/30. Still for sub $200 for a decent 91/30 you can't complain.

And the 91/30 is more accurate.

M38 and M44 are double the price simply bc they are a little shorter?

Rarer. The Russians manufactured far fewer carbines than 91/30 rifles. You'll find the older pre 91/30 rifles and anything Finnish related going for a premium as well when stumbled across. The MFS 203gr soft nose shoots extremely well in one of my Mosins. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer or moose with it....plenty of good hunting rifles in the rack though, no sure if it'll ever happen. We have been talking about having a 'vintage' hunting day though....

My first Mosin deer, using a 1944 VKT M39 with Igman 150gr SP at ~90m. Kind of overkill on that button buck. It also shoots the MFS 203gr SPs well but I have not yet used them on game, although others in addition to Fiddler have reported good results with them on deer, boar, moose, and bear.

That is a BEAUTIFUL Finn. Love what they did to those rifles.
