hey guys I did a search on here and found out I could adjust my m38 front sight with a punch and a hammer, but the sight is really really stuck. I hit it with punch and hammer and instead of just the front sight moving in the dovetail slot the whole assembly moved, im talking about the round ring that wraps around the barrel and has the dovetail cut into it. I ended up moving it back to its original position. How do you suppose I can move only the sight (front post and ring that goes around it) instead of the whole bloody thing? am I gonna have to purchase a special tool? who would have one?

If the whole base moves, then you have a problem. It is secured to the barrel by pins and interference fit. The sight base is probably badly fit or there may be a crack on it? I would try to make sure your sight base is properly secured to the barrel and then try to adjust the windage. Usually few taps on the sight ring is all it takes to move it.

my sight base does appear to have moved a little because I did go to town with a hammer and screwdriver on the base of the shroud, after heating up the shroud base and a night of soaking in wd-40 it finally moved to where I wanted it, now I just have to figure out a way to move the back a bit without causing anymore damage, I might just leave it since its only a tiny bit off. I know what a lot of you will think when I tell you this but....gasp...im thinking of getting it tapped and drilled for an ATI scope mount since the one I had installed on my sporterized 91/30 with shortened barrel and it worked out to be phenomenal, at one hundred 100 yards this think prints a 1.5 inch group with Prvi Partizan 150 gr spbt.

Most Mosin sight bases are seemingly miss aligned from factory. It may be were it needs to be already.

For future reference, if you're a tool guy and into mosins, search eBay for mosin sight pusher, or similar. There's a guy in the US who makes nice sight pushers for a variety of milsurps including the 91/30, m44, k31... I don't remember if he does an m38 one or not

M38 front sight is same as 91/30 so that tool should do. I imagine it works under the same premise as a bike chain link pin pusher?

A Mosin sight should just tap over in the dovetail. If it doesn't its just a bit stiff and rusted from sitting for 60 years. As with any milsurp rifle, give the parts a good soaking with any penetrating oil and get it to tap over and move BEFORE you go to the range.

OP, If your entire post is rotating, remove the pin completely and remove it for service. Something has rusted out and now is the time to correct it.
