Hello,
I've recently been given the opportunity to buy a Mosin M38 for under $200. I know these rifles usually go for around $300+, however the stock of this rifle has unfortunately been cut down. It also appears to have been well used. Just wondering what the value of this rifle is and if this is a good deal or if I should approach with caution. Thanks.

Looks like the receiver has been "scrubbed" of markings, ie they have been ground off. I would approach with caution. Aside from the sporterizing you don't know what has been done to it. Bubba might have tried to do a trigger job too.

If the bore looked good and you just wanted a shooter it might be worth the money. I would pay 150.00 tops, and that is if I was feeling generous.

The Ishies look rough on a good day 40's vintage.Tie strap it to a tire pointed downrange in a safe direction and fire it by a long cord. You will know soon enough............Harold

I wouldn't worry about a mosin blowing up.

Although I would make sure the trigger passes the bump test. If all goes well and the bore looks good I'd say 175$ would be the most I'd pay. If you point out surface rust, buggered stocks or even the bore condition you could probably get it for 125-150$.

Thanks everyone, if I don't get it for really cheap, I won't bother. Anybody else wants to add their 2 cents I'll continue to check this for a few days.
Thanks Again.

My ? is why would anybody scrub a mosin clean of its marks? I'd avoid that like a case 'o the crabs. Lord only knows what mods bubba did with the trigger.
