Sticky chamber. Take a brass .410 brush on the end of a cordless drill and give it a bunch of spins and solvent until its clean. If the cases are lacquered they can tend to fit tight. Try other ammo.

confirm 1 that your bolt is assembled properly ie it fit before but not now?

Is the shell in fact 7.62x54R?

Do you have an obstruction in the chamber etc?

pictures of the parts involved?

You may want to check the upper lug of the bolt head for hammer and file marks. If there are any some smoothing may be in order. I have also had to lap a few bolt heads with lapping compound when the head space was just a bit tight.

tried to clean the chamber with a 410 wire bush but still can't close the action.
guess i have to take it to a gunsmith to check for headspace then

thanks folks

Wait a minute. First is what is the gun's history? New to you??
There are very few things that can go wrong with a mosin. Think dumb Russian peasant...
Bolt won't close can even be due to an ill fitting aftermarket stock.
