I wonder if someone might have had this happen to them before when shooting the Mosin. I was trying out my Mosins at the range last weekend and the rifles were working great besides having a bit of a sticky bolt issue which I intend to fix. Anyways, I was shooting my M44 and was noticing that the brass rim of the cartridge, when extracted was having a little burr of brass form. I took the bolt out and noticed that the bolt head was deformed a bit near the extractor. I know that the bolt head was not like this before I shot it.

So what could be the problem? Anybody know where I can find a replacement bolt head or how to fix it?

Hmm. Unusual. It seems you need a new bolt head. On looking at your pictures, I have noticed that it looks like perhaps your bolthead handled some pressures at one point, and the metal was warped (note the oblongation of the firing pin hole). I would suggest grabbing another bolt head, that should fix your issue.

So does anyone know where I could locate a replacement bolt head here in Canada? I checked out Marstars site and John is out of them. I might have a way of getting one from the States, but have to see how that works out.

I think you can fix it.Just take of extractor, and bend it out. What kind of M44 do you have?

Milarm in Edmonton has a bunch in the back surplus room. They are in the green "bolt bin" type parts cabinet. Gord charged me $50.00 last month.

I would think that yours is fixable but, if it isn't, Tradex has them for $12.
I just got one for my 1906 Finn capture Tul'ski which is in the process of shedding a locking lug. I have had the rifle for some years now, never saw bolt-heads at a reasonable price. Now I can shoot the thing!

Have fun!

The date of your post is quite old however for anyone seeking military gun parts should explore Liberty Tree Collector's web site. He runs a mail order out of Cornith Maine, USA and I have ordered parts for my M44 Mosin Nagant and have been very satisfied with his service. I live in Canada and had the parts shipped with no problems. The bolt Head for this weapon sells for $17.00 USD.
