Hi there.
SO,
I'm shortly acquiring a Finn mosin nagant m91/30, including a scope,
It has the original straight bolt handle,

To use the scope, I want to buy a complete bolt already with a bent handle, because it's in my nature to prefer to keep things unmodified.
I'd rather keep the straight handle bolt, and have the option of switching back and fourth.

Is a complete bolt with a bent handle something that is easy to find?

I haven't managed to find any in the EE,

Are there any sites you know of that have this item for sale?

And, of course, if anyone reading this has the item I want for sale, please do PM me,

thanks very very much for any information, links, or sales to offer!

EDIT: when I say i wish to find one for sale, i mean bolts that people have modified, with their own homemade bent handles, etc. I'm not looking for milsurp true sniper bolts or anything like that

Most of the suggestions I've seen are to do with if the current bolt is matching numbers with the rifle. In that case, pick up a new bolt off fleabay or from a local source and have it sent off to "get bent". I know there are people who can steer you in that direction.

I found him and sent a message to him (boltman13)
thanks very much for the suggestion.

however, although I'll buy one from him if necessary, I would prefer to purchase one from a Canadian source.

Any additional suggestions?

thanks very much everyone.

There is another way to do this that could save you time and the expense of buying another bolt body, I just did mine. Cut off your existing bolt handle, drill and tap the bolt body and make another bolt handle and screw it in. It took me an afternoon to do mine, but saved me the expense and the wait for a modifled bolt body to arrive. If you want to install your straight bolt handle at a later date just drill and tap it and screw in a stud with the same thread as the bent bolt handle and screw it on. Some of the modified bolts are a bit lacking in quality, not flush with the woodwork etc.

Here is the one I did last week.

you could get a spare bolt body off flea bay and make your own . I did and i know of others who have too . I believe the boltman is just about the only guy making them in the states who will ship to Canukistan and its a long waiting list.
Off topic a bit but did you see Mythbusters shooting up some genuine russian scopes . they seem to be blowing up a lot of guns lately.:runaway:
ps spencer beat me to it

I don't really have the means or knowledge to do something like that.

I also again don't want to modify the existing bolt..
it may seem irrational but it's just the way I like to do things.
I'd rather keep it intact.

out of curiosity though, is there any issue with the handle becoming loose during use? (being threaded on and all)

thanks,

You don't know that for sure until you try.
I was in exactly the same position as you, I did not want to modify my existing bolt, but at the same time I did not want to spend $60 or $70 US for just a bent bolt handle. I made the new bent part from a bolt bought from home hardware, only when I had mastered this did I cut off the original bolt handle. I only have a vise, a drill press and a few files, I borrowed the tap and die set from a neighbour.

If you took your time only you would ever know, it is quite a simple matter to get the mating surface perfectly flat so that you can not see the join. Just put the bolt ( before it is bent) in a drill press and use a sharp file

It's screwed on real tight, I put the bolt body in the vice and levered the bent bolt handle into position with a piece of pipe. The bolt knob is also screwed on:D

My rifle is not very rare so it was probably not worth altering, but it was good practise for when I eventually do find a rare Finish variant.

You don't need to change the whole bolt - just the body. If you change the bolthead, headspace could be affected. Will installation of the scope require drilling and tapping? Got someone lined up to do that if you aren't going to do it yourself?
If you don't want to buy an altered bolt body, or have one altered, get a spare body, and try the conversion yourself. If it doesn't work, you are out only the body and your time.
Before doing any non-reversible alterations to the rifle, you might want to post a description of the rifle here, to find out if it has any particular value.

Do't drill and tap a Finn!!! If you must D&T something, do it to a rifle that isn't rare, like a cheap Century import M91/30 with the dot matrix imort mark.

UPDATE

coincidentially, while you are saying "DONT DRILL//TAP a FINN!"
I just picked up the rifle today, and oh boy i love it.

I've decided, Im going to leave it alone, and use the scope for maybe some sort of SKS dragunov immitation or something. we'll see.

but yes. as it stands, the finn shall remain untouched.

THANK you for all your help though, as I'm sure I'll still make an M91/30 sniper out of something someday soon.

thanks so much all

You do realise that when you do find that rare Finn variant and alter it, it will be worthless, don't you?
