Heys Guys, Basically I went to an Auction 2 weeks ago and bought what apears to be a Mosin Nagant Dragoon Edition ( I will try and confirm that but I am not really concerned about the i just wanted a Mosin Nagant ) so the rifle is in rough shape there was like 7-8 big scratches which really gave the rifle a bad look ( To me anyways ) and well the barell is in decent condition 7 on 10 and all the other metals parts I would give it a 6 on 10, so basically to me the overall rifle would have a 5.5 on 10 and would love to bring it back up to a 9 on 10 So with you guys Help i should be able to do it! so here are my questions.

What was the Varnish used on these ?

What color where the Sling Hole Escutcheons ? Was it the Brass finish or something more like silverish ?

Was the Dragoon Edition mounted with a Scope ? The answer seem to be no anyways but would like to double check

Was it usually equiped with a Bayonette ? If so what model

How hard is it to polish a Bolt ? I have no experience gunsmithing at all

The internals of the trigger seem to be grease should i clean it up?

If it is an actual dragoon anything you do to it will really devalue it. Please post pics so we can see what exactly you are dealing with.
 
Many dragoons were "upgraded" to the standard 91.30 pattern so finding them unmolested is quite a challenge. My one guess for possible sources would be Spanish civil war examples that did not go back to the USSR.

If she is a legitimate Dragoon, leave her as is, anything else will likely de-value the rifle considerably.

1891/30 Dragoon rafle dated 1939, 5-sht, 729mm bbl, blued finish, non-match bright bolt, hooded post frt sight & tangent rear sight, str bolt hdl, hdwd full military stock w/leather sling; Condition: mod finish wear, exc bore, gd stock w/average wear; Function: exc

So in my opinion the stock was in terrible shape the picture do look good but honestly was terrible I will pretty much stick to my plan to restore it as having non matching bolt already decreases its value imo so now the question is where can I find the same varnish as factory ?
 
If she is dated 1939, she would not be a Dragoon, she would be a regular 91.30 model.

She looks fine to me, enjoy her as is, keep her clean ,and she will serve you well.
 
Listen guys in my opinion it is a non matching 91.30 which already I do not consider it valuable I just want a fun little restoration project I understand restoring old military surplus rifles can be frown upon but you know I don't wan't it to look good in the safe Thank you desporterizer for the info now any one know if I can order that online ?

*I found white shellac at home hardware and was curious was there suppose to be pigmentation in the shellac applied to these rifles they seem to have some color in them ?

Shellac comes in various shades from brown to clear. The only ones that you don't have to order off the net are amber & clear.. The rest you can get from shellac.net if desired. You might be surprised the value a mosin with mm bolt can be to some folks (myself included) depending on model.
 
Order "garnet" flake non-dewaxed shellac from shellac.net - that is an exact replica for the original shellac. You will have to cut it yourself with denatured alcohol, but this is easy. Apply it by brush. I would recommend before you do that, liberally brush denatured alcohol onto the stock to melt the existing shellac and allow it to re-dry. It may well fix any existing issues if you are careful - certainly it will remove some finish scratches if done properly.

Don't sand it and don't strip the wood, it will look like crap if you do. These stocks are supposed to be dark with crisp edges and a little wear. It's a milsurp after all, not a piece of furniture.

Looks like it has a round receiver so can't be a dragoon. Think I'd be checking for refurb marks as well. ;)

Long story short, if it's a unique gun, which dragoons are, then having to ask questions like that will result in a loss of value. There's really no way around it because in order to safely refinish a unique firearm without losing value requires knowledge on what to do and not do, which isn't there if you have to ask.

So, it's your gun. Just know that the refinish job will not be improving its historical or monetary value. If that's fine, then go right ahead, otherwise you may be better off selling it at a profit and buying a cheaper and better condition 91/30 AND all the tools and components (shellac etc) to do the job and still have money left over. Just consider it.
