Bear... defense?

Go for it. Most of them have been re-arsenaled but don't choose one that is a rare example of the type, that would be a waste of money and a waste of a perfectly rare rifle. Get one that doesn't have a lot of value and go to town. There's 17.5 million of them out there apparently. I am open to modifications on the Mosin. Done right, you could actually increase the value. Yes, you heard it here first! And yes, it would be an excellent bear gun, comparable to a .30-06 which will take down any North American game animal.

Ok this is not a bear defence thread!

Ive been around long enough to know better!

That said I have plenty of short rifles like levers or 22's so looking for something bigger.

I have been thinkin about a .375 Ruger but that is overkill for my hunting needs, and the price tag is daunting for a student working part time.

Mosin Nagant is around 150 shipped, stock prolly 150 shipped.

I am unsure of what a cut crown and reinstalling the front sight would cost though.

From what I see it is a pretty heavy round and a quick cycling action as well.

I have an M44 and carry it in the bush LOTS.

Surplus 54R ammo shoot through tree's that are VERY Thick, more then 16 inches.

Keep in mind that is FMJ, not a SP.

I am VERY VERY content carrying that caliber anywhere in the bush where big game may be, FMJ is cheap for target practice.

grab one of westrifle mosins for 110. you can restock it and sell the stock and fittings to someone trying to restore one. you can bob the barrel down to 20 inch or so and then silver solder the sight or some other sight at the muzzle. for best results a modified bolt handle is the way to go. the sniper style is nice an is also easy to do. a scout scope mount is easy and cheap as well. If you want some input on how to do any of this stuff PM me. don't stop cutting and changing until you get EXACTLY what you want. happy modding

blah blah blah.....

You've never shot one of these before, have you? Heavy round, yes. Quick cycling action and Mosin don't belong in the same sentence. As stated on the 7.62 site,
You consider it a badge of honor when you cycle 5 rounds without the aid of a 2x4.

(E)

There are still M44's around - lots of smaller gunshops have them, also the M38 would be worth considering (same gun, no bayonet). The 7.62x54r is in the same class as 30-06 or 8mm (the original loading) ie a bit heavier than a factory 303. An M44 should be around $250 in as new condition. Nagants are a bit like Enfields as far as sturdy goes, you won't kill one in one lifetime. A decent No5 Enfield would probably be a better choice (easier to find ammo and 10 rounds in the mag).
