Mosin Nagant Headspace

Hi everyone ! I have mosin with a very loose bolt and I became a bit concerned about headspace. I have not shot it yet and I won't until next summer so I don't know how accurate it is, but I'd like to check the headspace just to make sure it's not that bad. I heard there's a way to check headspace using electrical tape ? Does it work ? I just don't want to buy 50$ gauges for this little deal.

So can anybody tell me if it's ok to check headspace using electrical tape or is there an other way without using gauges ?

I wouldn't.

The headspace gauge is 20$
You don't need all three to test if its safe, just one.

I'd spend the 20 for peace of mind, or try to borrow one. I'm sure a member in your area is willing to help.

Loose in what manner?

The bolt head connector and the bolt head itself are looser then what I usually see (Moving a lot) and the bolt closes very easily whitout resistance. The opening of the bolt is normal though.

I've put four layers of electric tape on the back of a round and the bolt won't close. The question is, can I assume that it's good ?

Forget the looseness and shoot it. I have tested over 100 of the dammed things and not one has failed a headspace test.

Shoot it for the first time away from your face, with your arms full extended just to be safe. It'll be fine.

buy the guage, okie guages, i bought the no go and field, mine passed and i shot it on monday, everything ran fine,

If its what I think you are talking about (the bolt head has play) it is loose until its loaded with a round or maybe missing something.

+1 on okie headspace guages, bought a no go and field guages for my Enfield from him. Good transaction, quick shipping. I should've grabbed a 7.62x54r set as I'll be buying a 91/30 soon enough.

Because the overwhelming majority of the Mosin-Nagant rifles in Canada have been arsenal refurbished they will have good headspace.

A gauge for peace of mind can't hurt though.

I've shot it and everything is fine ! These rifles are ridiculous... I mean they look horrible sometimes but men... they shoot well whatever you do to them. I should buy crates of them ahahah I really respect this rifle. It's also the perfect gun for winter shooting since it's Russian made and have seen the winter of 1942. Everything that comes out of Russia is winter proof anyway LOL
