Did a search on here and couldnt find too much on the topic, maybe I didn't look hard enough lol. Picked up a new Mosin last night, very clean had the cosmoline removed, I had to adjust the firing pin protrusion a turn, overall love the rifle and can't wait to shoot it. Just wondering if the bolt and rifle serial numbers match if its crucial to check the headspace. I called around to a few shops and they do not have gauges for sale, nor do their gunsmiths have em on hand.
Thanks for any input

Thanks for the response, the fella I bought it from said he shot it without issue also, seemed to have all of his fingers and facial features attached.

The Mosin fires a 7.62x54R cartridge - the R stands for Russian, although since it is a rimmed cartridge it can be used to stand for Rimmed.

This means that the cartridge does NOT headspace on the shoulder, but on the rim itself. The thickness of the rim determines the headspace, similar to the .22LR cartridge.

As long as the bolt & receiver serial numbers match, you shouldn't have a problem with headspacing. Shoot that ol' Mosin and enjoy it!

I didnt think it possible but that last post actually made me MORE excited to get this old war relic out to the range or the woods!

I actually had another question too, anyone have any experience with the MFS 203 grain soft point 7.62x54r, the shops around here carry it, wondering what opinions anyone had on it.

Did you move the pin in or out ?
Make sure it doesn't protrude too far...I blew a primer once, cocking knob came back and broke my thumbnail.
Yeah maybe I shouldn't have been holding it like that...but better to break a nail rather than my face.
Freaky to say the least, so just be careful and use the depth gauge !!

Had to crank er back a full turn, it was hitting the gauge on the high end when I got it.
That sounds painful, did you hail mary your rifle downrange afterwards? haha

Had to adjust the firing pin on my Mosin as I was getting slightly harder strikes than I would have liked. Simply backed it out a bit and problem solved. Absolutely love the Mosins and their beautiful simplicity. Enjoy your rifle.

well I had er out earlier this evening, fired without a hitch, that 203 grain shoots some high though haha, I definitely need time to adapt to the mosin sights

You've got that backwards.

With regards to the 203 Gr MFS, it works, for sure, but I've ordered some of the lighter Prvi SPBT's from Canada Ammo (150 gr, I think?) to try those out, as I just think shooting a bullet weight, in SP, similar to what it was designed to fire in FMJ, should get the rifle to behave more consistently (i.e. no having to go re-zero sights with SP ammo before hunting season.)

Tradex one of the sponsers above has a Mosin Nagant accessory kit with the tool you need plus all the other goodies you may be missing . The great price of $ 17.50 cannot be beat!
