mosin nagant in 7.62 NATO???

I have a "Bannerman" Mosin in 30/06, but never heard of one in 308. You would have to set the barrel back well over an inch to clean up the chamber - not practical with the original barrel. Bolt face would have to be changed and mag mods would be in order.

It's not a 308......

I would be willing to bet he was. The two rounds share almost nothing in common(not that has ever stopped someone from doing something silly).

Buddy gave me one (it had .308 Winchester stamped on the side of the barrel) and I kept the bolt and other bits and threw the barrel and receiver in the bush.

I have seen one once, not the type of thing I would like to pull the trigger on. I have never been lucky at games of chance.

Just out of curiosity, what makes it so impractical. People do conversions from 30-06 to 7.62 nato in Garands all the time, even though I thought that the 7.62 nato round is just a shortened 30-06 round and isn't rimmed like the russian round.

The body of 308 is very simlar to the 30-06, just shorter. The 54R body is very large and thus the bbl must be set back very far to remove the wide chamber.

I've heard of this quite a few times from hunters who pick up Nagants as a cheap alternative hunting rifle.
They misconstrue the caliber 7.62 X 54R as 7.62 Nato.
Just this weekend, the brother in law's brother, who had bought a Polish M44, told me it was .308/7.62 Nato.
It wasn't until I showed him the difference in the 2 calibers did he finally believe me that it was chambered for 7.62 Russian.

There is a M1891 7.62 x54R Russian ctg for the Moisin Nagant, Tokarev rifle and others and a 7.62x39 M1943 Russian ctg for the SKS, AK etc. Totally non interchangeable.

i had a m.n in 30-06 too.
banner mans in the us imported and converted some after ww1 ( maybe the ruskies didnt pay fer the guns remington made?) the 30-06 version bolt heads are smaller than the 7.62x54 guns,
anyway FOUND OUT THRU READING these 30-06 shouldnt be fired , reason not sure to be honest.
anyway would kinda say the same fer any found now in 308 also,
mine shot ok ( didnt try it after reading said article. )
hope thats a help/

"Some of the surplus U.S. Mosin Nagant rifles were sold to NRA members through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) program in the 1930s. Others reached the market after dealers converted them to .30-06. This involved cutting a small amount off the rear of the barrel and setting it back about 1/2 inch before rechambering. This eliminated the section where the serial number appeared. Most authorities consider these conversions to .30-06 to be unsafe to shoot."

Having inspected one of these bannerman conversion, the concern seems to be that the shortening of the barrel required in order to rechamber for the longer 7.62x63 (30'06), puts the shoulder/mouth of the cartridge right where the thick chamber diameter tapers sharply to the thin barrel diameter. The guy that owns it only shoots cast bullets out of it and has no safety concerns with his reduced loads. It's trickey to load for as the mosin has at least a .310 bore and 30'06 dies are set up to expand for a .308 bullet.
